Right hand (FCC), meet left hand (CDC, NIH, USDA, DHHS):
The National Institutes of Health: Word On Health, June 2002:
"Kids who watch the most hours of television have the highest incidence of obesity."
The Surgeon General's 2001 Call To Action To Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity in Children and Adolescents:
"Reduce the amount of time you and your family spend in sedentary activities, such as watching TV or playing video games. Limit TV time to less than 2 hours a day."
The CDC's National center for Chronic Disease Prevention & Health Promotion, Winter 2000 Issue:
"TV viewing also affects what children want to eat. 'We know it affects patterns of food consumption,' said William H. Dietz, MD, PhD, Director of NCCDPHP's Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity. 'Children eat the foods they see advertised on TV. If you've seen any children's shows, you know that these foods tend to be fast foods, sugared breakfast cereals, and snacks. TV is a behavioral health hazard.'"
1998 USDA-linked article headline:
"Obesity-Linked Diabetes Rising in Children."
Left hand (parts of the gov't working to keep us healthy), meet right hand (parts that couldn't care less):
October 4, 2004 FCC Press Release:
"FCC Chairman Michael K. Powell launched a multi-year, multi-phased consumer education and outreach campaign - 'DTV - Get it!' - designed to inform the public about the digital television (DTV) transition and the availability of high-definition and other digital content and to provide resources for Americans interested in joining the DTV ranks."
The new gov't-sponsored web portal to promote this crap:
dtv.gov.
Un-freakin' believable!
