Clark County Election Dept.

(Oct. 12) -- Employees of a private voter registration company allege that hundreds, perhaps thousands of voters who may think they are registered will be rudely surprised on election day. The company claims hundreds of registration forms were thrown in the trash.

Anyone who has recently registered or re-registered to vote outside a mall or grocery store or even government building may be affected.

The I-Team has obtained information about an alleged widespread pattern of potential registration fraud aimed at democrats. Thee focus of the story is a private registration company called Voters Outreach of America, AKA America Votes.

The out-of-state firm has been in Las Vegas for the past few months, registering voters. It employed up to 300 part-time workers and collected hundreds of registrations per day, but former employees of the company say that Voters Outreach of America only wanted Republican registrations.

Two former workers say they personally witnessed company supervisors rip up and trash registration forms signed by Democrats.

"We caught her taking Democrats out of my pile, handed them to her assistant and he ripped them up right in front of us. I grabbed some of them out of the garbage and she tells her assisatnt to get those from me," said Eric Russell, former Voters Outreach employee.

Eric Russell managed to retrieve a pile of shredded paperwork including signed voter registration forms, all from Democrats. We took them to the Clark County Election Department and confirmed that they had not, in fact, been filed with the county as required by law.

So the people on those forms who think they will be able to vote on Election Day are sadly mistaken. We attempted to speak to Voters Outreach but found that its office has been rented out to someone else.

The landlord says Voters Outreach was evicted for non-payment of rent. Another source said the company has now moved on to Oregon where it is once again registering voters.  It's unknown how many registrations may have been tossed out, but another ex-employee told Eyewitness News she had the same suspicions when she worked there.

It's going to take a while to sort all of this out, but the immediate concern for voters is to make sure you really are registered.

Call the Clark County Election Department at 455- VOTE or click here.

The company has been largely, if not entirely funded, by the Republican National Committee. Similar complaints have been received in Reno where the registrar has asked the FBI to investigate.

The DNC needs to immediately file suit with the FEC. They must also find this company's offices nationwide and SHUT THEM DOWN.

...how the hell do these creatures know which registrations are Democrats and which are Republicans?  It's because you have this "registering as" thing, isn't it?  I know you need it to run the primaries, but I always thought it was sort of creepy, and now I'm convinced it is.

A quick remedy would be to encourage everyone to register as a Republican; you can change later if you need to.  The scum willl probably switch to tearing up everybody's forms, but it's something, at least.

        •  Even more important (4.00 / 7)

Is to get this into the major news stories in Nevada. This will cost the Republicans thousands of votes if they are shown to have funded an illegal effort to disenfranchise thousands of voters. These are third world tactics that should be loudly condemned by all Americans.

I suggest all Nevadans contact Sen. Harry Reid and tell him to get on this. His e-mail contact form is here:

    •  No actual registration (none / 0)

The trouble with your receipt idea is that the actual form never made it to the registrar/elections' office if I understand the Nevada situation correctly. Having a receipt that doesn't link to an actual registration form on file would nullify the ballot. This is one of the more heinous acts. That is why the above report from the TV station mentions that people should be calling the registrar to confirm they are registered now. Does anyone know Nevada's deadline for registration?

      •  Nevada Deadline (none / 0)

The deadline for registration in Nevada has already gone by.  So those who registered with this outfit are pretty much SOL.

There might well be a valid civil suit if the victims could be identified.  And if the allegation made in the diary can be proven, there are definitely grounds for criminal prosecution.

I wonder how many other voter registration "drives" they conducted before they got caught?

    •  What I don't get... (none / 0)

The rational side of me knows that all Republicans are not sleezy, low-life, anti-democracy, un-American scum. Maybe not even most, though I struggle with that one.

I think this is clearly part of a pattern and mindset within the Republican Party and I don't understand how anyone who at all values and understands, even in the most minor way, the principles upon which this country stands...how could they remain in this party, or not at least fight to reclaim some sense integrity and honor?

  •  Ok...so the Sinclair thing... (4.00 / 9)

i could give a shit about...

This however is, as quite correctly stated above, where we have to draw the line.

    Let's investigate.
    Let's pursue.
    Let's raise hell when appropriate.
And let's make sure that the media knows that stories like this one are THE stories this media cycle.

I'll give them FIVE Sinclairs...but don't let them fucking stop US Citizens from casting or counting thier vote.....

Amen on your list above, KO.

And let's make sure there's nothing else standing in between registered voters and the polls. In addition to GOTV there's election protection: poll observation, preventing intimidation, and even providing legal support if you're trained to do that.

Go to a swing state, if you can make it. Do it in your own seemingly safe state, if you need to be closer to home. I signed up for election day duty in Northern California.

      YEEEEAAAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

      (Thanks. I feel better now.)

    •  Agree (none / 0)

I couldn't agree more. I have been feeling the past 24 hours that everyone was getting distracted with the Sinclair shit, and ignoring these items that were likely happening.

We have Nevada, Ohio, South Dakota, Colorado, and of course Florida and I am sure there are a few states that I have forgotten or just haven't heard about.

Please people let us focus on the important items in the next 3 weeks. We don't have much time, and these things must be dealt with immediately or they disappear into the grind of the election momentum.

    •  I don't think they are the same (4.00 / 2)

But I can't find anything on this "Voters Outreach of America" thing.

Well, one thing, here, mentioning "Aaron "A.J." James, who directs Voters' Outreach of America", and was a contractor who oversaw "the No Taxpayer Money For Politicians initiative, a right-wing effort to ban candidates from receiving public financing".

      Nothing else so far.

    •  Is it the same "America Votes"? (4.00 / 2)

The article says that this "America Votes" is really a private company called "Voters' Outreach of America", whereas americavotes.org seems to be a non-profit. They may well be different.

"Voters' Outreach of America" is apparently headed by a person named Aaron "A.J." James. Anyone know anything about him?

BTW, here's a link to the only story I've found that mentions this group; it seems to link it to another right-wing organization ("No Taxpayer Money For Politicians").

We should contact Secretary of State Bill Bradbury about this. If this company has been operating in Oregon for the past couple of weeks, who knows what damage they've done.

You know, this reminds me of a story a few weeks back. Oregon voter registrations were favoring Democrats 2 to 1. And the Republican response was they were waiting until October to do a big registration push. I wonder if this company was part of that push...

With villains such as these, how can the Thugs ever hope to snatch this election?   Just because it was fairly easy last time, and gave James Baker the role of his lifetime (please, please, no applause) doesn't mean it is going to be that way this time...   and, with things like this to follow up after the election, this will lay down a record of mischief and sleaze that will stick to the GOP like glue.

  •  Other Nevada tactics (4.00 / 2)

And if they do show up, Repugs plan to challenge these Dem voters.  From this site:

In late August, Gary Peck, executive director of the ACLU of Nevada, met with the registrars from the Reno and Las Vegas areas.  Peck says the registrar of Washoe County, which includes Reno, "noted that he had received calls" from people identifying themselves as members of the Republican Party. These Republicans, according to Peck, said "they intended to be out at polling places to challenge voters."

The registrar of Washoe County is Daniel Burk. "An official of the Republican Party" came to his office one day with a small group, he says. The official asked how to launch a "full-scale program for challenging voters who come to the polls." Burk says he informed the Republicans that vote challenges should be used narrowly, when one voter with personal knowledge of another calls attention to a problem.  [....]

Burk worked as a registrar in Oregon for eighteen years before he came to his position in Nevada seven years ago. "I have never in all those twenty-five years had a person challenge another person," he says.

The revelations, says Peck, are "consistent with reports people are getting all around the country. Republicans have a national strategy of going out and challenging voters" come November 2.

      These louts should be SHACKLED.

Russ Dove is editor of tianews.com, the website of Truth in Action, which supports Protect Arizona Now. He says he visited five polls on September 7. As a door-to-door campaigner for Proposition 200, Dove says he heard "verbal evidence from individuals on the street who said, 'Yes, illegal immigrants are voting.' " Dove says he is "bent on discovering" how many are doing so.

On the day I contact Dove, he is a little out of sorts. The AFL-CIO, he says, has accused him of intimidating voters. "Why would someone who supports the Constitution and wants to exercise his rights as a citizen intimidate U.S. citizens?" he asks. "What they're saying is that they know there are illegals voting."

On primary day, Dove says he sported "a black T-shirt with 'U.S. Constitutional Enforcement' on the back" and the image of a badge on the front. "I wear a tool belt," he says. On primary day, that belt carried tools, a camera, and a video recorder. Dove says he used the camera to take "some photographs of the polling places." He used the video recorder to film "all the conversations I had."

Dove says that more people want to monitor polls in November. "After the AFL-CIO threw their fit," he says, people started wanting to get involved. "They said, 'Let's get the T-shirts printed up and let's go," he says.

"The only people we will bother are people who are in violation of the law," says Dove. For instance, if he sees "a busload of Hispanic individuals who didn't speak English and who voted," he plans to follow that bus to make sure they aren't voting more than once.

  •  And more thug tactics in NV (4.00 / 2)

This is amazing. How many Republicans nationwide are trying to PREVENT fellow citizens from voting? I thought Bush was in favor of democracy.

This is from Sunday's SF Gate:

The former executive director of the state Republican Party is attempting to disqualify thousands of Democrats from the voting rolls in Nevada's 3rd Congressional District.

Dan Burdish, a Las Vegas businessman, on Friday hauled four boxes of challenges into the Clark County elections office seeking to disqualify voters whom he says don't live at the addresses where they registered.

Burdish said he took the action because people should not be allowed to vote for politicians in districts where they no longer live.

He said the move isn't designed to prevent people from voting in state or national races. But Burdish, a registered Republican, doesn't deny he's trying to influence some of the local races.

"I admit I am partisan and that all the challenges I submitted are registered Democrats," Burdish said in a statement. "These challenges were submitted to keep fraudulent votes from being cast for candidates that represent a specific geographical area."

Almost all of the 17,000 voters were Democrats. Most of them were registered in the 3rd District, where Democrat Tom Gallagher is challenging incumbent Republican Jon Porter. [....]

Under state law, voters who move without updating their voter registrations still can vote, but so-called inactive voters must vote at their old precincts. They also can vote at any early voting site. [....] The district attorney's office was expected to rule on the challenge next week.

Nev. Move to Purge Some Dem Voters Fails

      By ADAM GOLDMAN
      .c The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Elections officials have rebuffed an attempt by a former
GOP operative to purge about 17,000 Democrats from the voter rolls in the
battleground state of Nevada, where the two presidential candidates are in a
      dead heat.

Dan Burdish, former head of the state Republican Party, filed a challenge
last week claiming the Democrats should be removed from the rolls because
      they were inactive voters.

But Clark County Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax rejected the move Tuesday,
saying Burdish could only challenge voters in his precinct, and then only if
he has personal knowledge that they are inactive.

``I don't think pulling names off a database equates to personal
      knowledge,'' Lomax said.

Under state law, voters are placed on ``inactive status'' if they move and
don't update their addresses within 30 days of receiving notice to do so.
Their registrations are then canceled if they don't vote in two consecutive
      federal elections.

Democrats have criticized Burdish for trying to influence the hotly
contested congressional race between Republican Rep. Jon Porter and his
Democratic challenger, former casino executive Tom Gallagher, in the 3rd
      District.

State Republican officials have also distanced themselves from Burdish.

But Burdish denied trying to disenfranchise people.

The Democrats are just ``blowing hot air as far as I'm concerned,'' Burdish
said. ``I'm not suppressing any vote unless it's in a local district they
are not allowed to vote in.''

The latest poll from Oct. 5 showed Democratic Sen. John Kerry with a 1
percentage point lead over President Bush in Nevada. Democrat Al Gore lost
the state by fewer than 22,000 votes in 2000.

      Desperation II - Kerry's Bogus `Voter Intimidation'

Making up stuff seems to have become an art form for John Kerry, who's trotting out more false accusations on alleged voter intimidation. He's even harping about `disenfranchisement' during the 2000 election (puh-LEEZ...) even though nobody is able to name anyone who's disenfranchised anyone anywhere. It's also quite an insult, as outlined in an Oct. 1 Wall Street Journal piece that calls Kerry's accusations, "the most heinous charge he's made. It outrages us, and it ought to outrage every American who takes voting rights seriously." In short, John Kerry is spreading a "baseless and inflammatory claim." One thing we do know, however, is that left-wing groups dedicated to John Kerry are under investigation for fishy voter registration efforts.
