I just got finished watching the PA senatorial debate on C-Span and I was struck by just how weak a candidate Arlen Specter seemed to be. He came across as a very unimpressive politician who is trying to play both sides. On the one hand he has hitched himself to Bush's wagon of extremism, yet he'd still have you believe he is an independent moderate.
Joe Hoeffel, meanwhile struck me as very honest and forthright. By no means is he the most charismatic candidate I've ever seen, but next to Specter he came across very well.
What I'm wondering is why does this race look like it does? Specter does not seem like a strong candidate and the polling I've seen seems to back that up. On the other hand, Hoeffel seems to be having a hard time getting his name out there.
I've been following this race from the periodic updates on the main site, and I'm wondering what's going on here? And more importantly than that, I'm wondering why we, the DKos community, is not doing something about it! We've flooded Tony Knowles's campaign with money, among others in the DKos dozen, and to great effect. I think the targetting of those races has been very effective, but missing from that list is the Hoeffel campaign.
Even Kos seems to have given up on this race (judging from the tone of his posts on the subjects), but I think that is a mistake. Specter is a very weak candidate and this is our opportunity to take him down! How can Specter expect to win by tying himself to President Bush, when Bush is on track to lose Pennsylvania?
Is there anyone else out there who agrees with me? I've decided I'm willing to chip in $50 which I can ill afford for the Hoeffel campaign, if I can get a consensus that other people are willing to do it too. And, don't forget, giving money to Hoeffel will also help Kerry in Pennsylvania!
I'm not willing to piss into the wind if no one thinks it's worth it, and it's going to be just me all by myself. But if enough of us decide to do it, we can make it a flood that helps wash Specter out of office?
Anyone else with me?
