I'm heading out the door to do more canvassing in my Cleveland swing suburb. My wife and I have been canvassing for MoveOn, and I gotta tell ya that I never thought I'd be doing this, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
The funny thing is I thought I'd really hate this, but I love it. I'm quite shy in person, but wherever we looked to volunteer they needed only canvassers and phone bank help, so we chose canvassing.
MoveOn supplies you a list of new registrants, swing voters and occassional voters. This last group is VERY important because this group is overwhelmingly JK and these people vote when they think things are going the wrong direction...all they need is a little push.
It's so easy to do, and we've met(overwhelmingly) cool people as a result. JK supporters are the nicest people you'd want to meet. They invite you inside, speak their minds, and thank you for your efforts.
If you feel that you couldn't do this job, you'd be very wrong. You aren't out to 'sell' or 'convert' people. If you knock on a door and people say they are for Bush, you thank them for their time and leave. If they got Bush yard signs and bumper stickers, you just keep walking. If they are for JK or leaning, you remind them that they need to vote on Nov 2nd..leaners get a little fact sheet.
I KNOW we've turned numerous leaners, not due to powerful persuasion on my part but because we took the time to listen and they are impressed you care enough to do some work. A lot of them ask for yard signs, which we gladly deliver.
PLEASE take some time to help any org that is working to elect JK. You can do it, and it'll be fun and a very educational and empowering thing.
