Meteor Blade metioned in the teaser that there is becomming an issue of too many diaries being written.
The solution for me has been to realize there are only two diaries per day. I do not know if every one is honoring that policy, or if there are consequences if you don't, but it helps me keep myself under control.
More than once, I have rushed to put out a diary on a busy day. It seemed important enough at the time, but later, when I had time to reflect or something else came up, I had already used one of my precious diaries and could not, (alright, would not... ) violate the policy to post something else, no matter how important.
So, I have learned, unless what I have to say is really important, I fined a place to put it in comments on an existing diary, or the open thread. If everybody did that, there would be fewer diaries, and the ones written would be more worthwhile.
It is becoming quite difficult to even skim the diaries for the most important ones, let alone have any belief that I have even SEEN a fraction of them. At least 3 - 4 times a week, I spend 4 hours or more here, but the traffic is just getting to be so high, I know I am missing a great many interesting topics, because they are simply pushed off the list so quick I never see them.
And yes, I feel slighted, that my own postings don't seem to be getting a very big audience, but that is not the issue. That is my own ego, and my own problem, and has nothing to do with the fact that there is just more traffic than I can consume.
To be fair, this is a VERY highly charged time, and of course, traffic is through the roof. That will continue through election day, and beyond as we seek to determine what the election means, and where we go from there. But that means it is even MORE important, not less, that everyone consider carefully how important what they are posting is.
I am NOT suggesting self censorship, simply a consideration that if there is more posted than anybody can possibly read, then it becomes noise, not discourse.
Perhaps a category system for diaries might be a good idea after all. Then KOS might be able to add recommended diaries by category, as well as overall interest. Then they would be easier to track.
I am a generalist, and read a great many topics, but a certain number of diaries are things that simply don't interest me, or I don't have time to follow. I am sure that others find even fewer topics interesting, and have an even harder time culling out all of the threads they aren't interested in.
There, I probably have managed to step on at least a few toes, but those are my thoughts. I simply cannot keep up with the sheer volume of traffic anymore. It does not mean I will leave, it just means that I suspect that I miss more than I catch, and I think I am relatively active on the board.
Just some late night musings.
