Back when Saddam Hussein realized the USA was coming with its full military might, he penned a novel that is sure to become a historical curiosity. While it is considered bad form to promote a former strongarm's work, it is interesting to see the subject matter he chose.
The manuscript, rumored to be smuggled out by Saddam's daughter Raghad, was delievered to a Japanese journalist and translator Itsuko Hirata. The book was released today in Japan under the title that loosely translates as the "Devil's Dance." A much better working title than the English version listed above.
Set in the times of ancient tribal society, it tells a tale that closely mirrors actual modern day events, but with an Arab Lord of the Rings twist if you will. A prince fights the impossible fight, but in Saddam's book he loses, big time. Hirata even says it has a "melodic clarity" to it that could be adapted to make a musical. Can't wait for that off Broadway production.
The part I like best was that one of the most evil men in the world's history, as painted by the Bush Administration, will have a nice Violet flower theme for its cover.
