    how do you REALLY feel?

    •  You CAN make a difference... (none / 1)

You don't have to live in a battleground state to make all-important get-out-the-vote calls. You can do it from wherever you live, starting now. Here's how...

America Coming Together has partnered with Party For America to enlist people like YOU to make GOTV calls to registered Democrats in the battleground states.

As of 1 a.m. this morning, 134,000 calls have already gone out. Help from people like YOU can up that number into the millions. And it's amazingly easy to do (only 3 steps necessary)...

      1. Go to Party For America. Here's what you'll see...

      2. Click 'Start Here' and you're taken to the sign-up page (which includes a sample phone script)...

photo hosting and image hosting by ImageVenue.com

Fill in your name, email, zip code and phone number (the phone number will only be used if there are questions about your calls). Then click 'Next' and you'll be signed up and taken to a 'thank you' page...

photo hosting and image hosting by ImageVenue.com
THAT'S ALL IT TAKES! You will be sent a phone list of 50 registered Democrats from a battle ground state. Mine was Ohio and the list arrived in my email within minutes.

PLUS you can get up to two lists per day, and have an impact on 100 voters! That means you could reach up to 300 people in vital battleground states over the next three days.

If you're wondering why calling registered Democrats would make a difference on people showing up at the polls, it's because person-to-person contact DOES make a huge difference in getting out the vote.

And here's an example of why. Say for instance that I asked you to RECOMMEND THIS DIARY so that it would end up on the Recommended Diaries list and help spur thousands or even tens of thousands more GOTV calls. That simple request from one caring person to another is likely to have an effect.

So, enough said. Just click on the link to sign up and get started.

the calls are easy. it is quite a good feeling.
        •  Thank you. (none / 1)

It's people like you who convince me we are just moments from victory.

And the great thing is anyone can do it. And consider that if just 1,000 Kossacks sign up, that could equal 100,000 extra GOTV calls per day in these critical states in this critical election.

      •  Done. (none / 1)

          •  Update (none / 0)

It took about an hour to get my phone list.  I started calling right away, using my free weekend minutes on my cell phone (calling from South Dakota to Ohio).  Of the list of 50 people, most of them were friendly, but about 3 or 4 of them hung up on me.  Not as bad as I expected.

Three were bad numbers, 3 were busy (I'll try again later), about 12 said they always vote for Democrats, and about 5 said they would not vote for Democrats.

I hope more people do this.  It only took about 1 1/2 hours to call the 50 numbers.

      •  Freep danger? (none / 0)

Sounds great, but - what can they do to stop this service getting freeped?

(Oh look, another 50 Democrats - delete).

OK, the limit of 100 each per day helps, but this service is fairly easy to script with the help of some dud Hotmail accounts.

        •  But Did YOU Sign Up? (none / 0)

An easy way to keep it from Freeps is for good people like you to sign up and make the calls. That will keep at least 50 people from being 'Freeped'.

Also, note that a legitimate phone number needs to be entered in order to sign up.

    •  FEEL GREAT - KERRY - WE - WILL WIN! (4.00 / 8)

I am an "OLD" Republican who has worked as hard as I can in GOTV for Kerry/Edwards here in Oregon.  We are going to win, the votes are there and they are being delivered!

This is not an issue of Democrats and Republicans, this is the issue of what kind of America do we want?  Do we want an America For Corporations or an America truely For The People?  Really, that's what it comes down to in this election.

Everyone has got to get involved!

  •  The Dr Sez .... GOTV (no matter how small) (4.00 / 4)

  •  Don't overdo it (none / 1)

There's been so much GOTV, GOTV, GOTV on the Dem side that, like the Wellstone fiasco, it's going to start turning against us. People are starting to get sick of it. We're not that desperate. Let's start acting a little confident.
    •  No such thing! (none / 0)

You can't do anything to turn off a Kerry supporter. Knock on their door, they'll still vote for Kerry. Ask them to use their bathroom, they'll still vote for Kerry. Knock on the door again, they'll still vote for Kerry.
      •  You're right (none / 1)

I forgot that GOTV is just to get Kerry voters to the polls, not to actually persuade anyone to change their minds to vote for Kerry.
      •  Ha! I did that! (none / 1)

Ask them to use their bathroom, they'll still vote for Kerry.

When I was canvassing infrequent voters for MoveOn I went to a house that wasn't on the list with a Kerry sign in the yard and asked to use their bathroom. No problem.

Don't underestimate the power of individual contacts. I just called a student who had signed off as a definite Kerry supporter, but with only two days to go she didn't know where she was supposed to vote. I emailed her all the info, including a map... it's that kind of effort at the margin that makes the difference.

    •  Numbers (none / 0)

Some people are reacting to the layering of GOTV efforts, but I think it is a numbers game.  You infuriate some but pick up more who might not vote otherwise.

I've been GOTV phonebanking for several days.  People sometimes don't know where their polling place is.  Or they need a ride to the polls.  Or they are not aware whether or not their state/county required them to bring ID.  They don't know about provisional ballots.  They don't know about 1-866-OUR-VOTE, the Election Protection hotline.

    •  Importance of GOTV (none / 0)

And how it doesn't matter if people complain about it.

Our field director tells us about a race down in Florida in 2002 where the candidate stopped GOTV phone calls a few days before the election because people were complaining about the calls.

She ended up losing by just a few hundred votes.

The improtant thing to remember is: REGULAR VOTERS DO NOT GET GOTV CALLS.

Voters targetted for GOTV are infrequent voting Democrats. They're getting calls because they will not vote otherwise.

That's why it doesn't matter if you piss off a few people into not voting because they likely weren't going to bother anyways.

If you vote regularly, you won't get phone calls telling you to go vote.

    •  what Wellstone fiasco? (none / 0)

      •  Traumatic. (none / 0)

Some emotional staffer of the Senator's started screaming "we will win!" at his memorial service--a little inappropriate but clearly just a young person expressing his emotion--and the Republicans here turned it into a scandal and used it to take the seat for Norm Coleman. Minnesotans tend to be reserved people and it wasn't hard for those Republican jerks to spin the thing into a Democrats-are-drama-queens story.

I used to be an Independent. Since that day I've been a Democrat.

Doesn't have much to do with GOTV though. The original poster thought we were talking about proselytizing, which is a different matter and can in fact backfire on you if you keep it up. GOTV is all good.

      •  the dude is clueless (none / 0)

The "Wellstone fiasco," was the act of not checking the speech of Paul Wellstone's best friend before he gave the final speech at the memorial. It was sort of an inapproprate speech, because it should have been more about the memories of an axtraordinary person, rather than a somewhat strange call to Republican Senators in the crowd to support Mondale, but it was ridiculous how Republicans spun it the next day...  I felt bad for the guy, because his best friend had just died, it was understandable to be a little off...

The memorial service as a whole was one the more amazing things I have ever seen in my life.  On zero days notice, tens of thousands of Minnesotans wrapped around block after block, waiting in line to commemorate the amazing man that he was.

Now, what does this have to do with GOTV efforts?  Uh, nothing.  The guy up thread is bizarrely off topic, and his logic is almost Ann Coulterish.

Everyone there seems very excited.  I think it could be a big win for us election night.  We're all over the Vegas area.  I'd say around 25% of the people I've called have already voted, and nearly all of the registered Democrats are definitely going to the polls, and definitely voting Kerry.  Telling somebody where their polling place is or how they can get a ride to the polls is a great feeling.

I woke up this morning with a big, fat knot in my stomach...thinking about this election.

I've done everything I know I can do...talked it up with my neighbors and family.  Voted myself (by mail in Oregon) and blogged and emailed for Kerry until my fingers bled.

Now it's up to the country to get the job done.

Being a control freak is such hard work...LOL.  And man...I'm nervous.

I woke up with a feeling of POWER today. Get yourself over to your local Democratic headquarters if you can and volunteer for election day work.
    •  Awoke With Positive Feeling (none / 1)

Spent last evening on the Carry Oregon phones, talking to the last few voters who had not mailed there ballots back to the elections office.  Only made 80 calls in 3 hours, I have made as many as 120 calls in that time.  But, what I found was very positive, most had either mailed it in or filled it out and were going to drop it off at one of the ballot boxes (Oregon does Mail In Ballots).

I was calling Democrats, Independents, and Others (can't remember that code designation), Republicans are not called, though I think there should have been a massive drive to contact them once.

Three of my democrats were voting for Bush, 42 were voting for Kerry, and 5 had not even opened the ballot, though they had it for at least 2 weeks.  I am an old, retied clergyman (for real), so I was eager to talk with them about their procrastination, it was interesting.  Two of them will not vote, they seemed to be mentally challenged, one even said they want to think another week about it. (Hmmm!) The other three were not going to vote for Bush, they each had issues with Kerry, claiming they did not know where he stood on issues such as African genocide, American poverty, and education.  Answered there questions and referred each to the DNC platform.  But, these young, new voters were thinking about their responsibility.

Most of my callers were first-time voters, very excited and Pro-Kerry.  A bunch of these voters not reached were probably at the game watching Oregon stomp Washington!

I just got called to do some out-of-state GOTV this evening.  It is not to late for any of you to help out!

Rain expected in OH and PA on E-day probably won't keep away the vote...but what if GOTV brings some nice blue (beautiful electoral-map BLUE) tarps to help shelter the voters waiting on line?

You can get them, cheap ($5 or $10 for a big one), at any autoparts or camping store. You could probably keep 20 or 30 voters dry w/a 9x12' one...And wouldn't it be a lovely symbolic gesture to have big swaths of beautiful BLUE across OH and PA??

  •  Lessons from Dean (none / 1)

Four of my colleagues are New Hampshirites who commute in to Massachusetts every day.  I think all will vote Kerry, but two have mentioned arm-twisting fatigue; one has unplugged his phone.

I hope that those driving the GOTV have learned what I understand to be the lessons from Dean's amateurish overkill in Iowa in February.  Are there good web references with call-banking pointers?

It was clear to me the last time I phone banked that it is important to give people some deliberate, focused coaching (beyond just handing them a script) and have someone performing some level of ongoing quality assurance on the outgoing calls.

    •  Dean in Georgia (none / 0)

As you know, Dean for America has morphed into Democracy for America. In Georgia, it's called Georgiafordemocracy.org.

They've got a truck sign going around town which says one thing "Vote." Doesn't say "Vote for Kerry." Just "Vote."

My daughter and I went around today with posters with that message, to houses with Kerry signs, asking those people to put the signs out Monday night or Tuesday morning.

Everyone was happy to do it. Everyone said they were getting out the vote. One guy screamed from his home-office, "we're gonna win!"

Everyone was smiling. Everyone knows. And everyone is working for the blessed day.

Once it's clear we've won, let's all switch our TVs to Fox and LAUGH AND LAUGH AND LAUGH.

My over-under on whether it's over by The Daily Show (10 PM Eastern) is under.

    •  Coaching Needed (none / 0)

Phone banking in Iowa was a nightmare, I could definitely use some phone banking coaching. Ever since then I have done face-to-face ONLY because phone banking was so hard.
    •  Coaching for Phone Bankers (none / 0)

I am doing a lot of training for phone bankers and I have found that the key is this:

Have a two or three sentence explanation about why this election is so important for you or your family personally.  This will cut through the crap with anyone who is undecided, angry about you calling for the hundreth time, angry because they disagree with you, or who is thinking about not voting.

Whenever I get anyone difficult on a phone I always drop back to, "Sir, I am just volunteering my time because so many members of my family have lost their health care over the past four years.  My aunt and uncle, my cousins, and my mother all NEED and affordable health care plan, and John Kerry and John Edwards are fighting for that.  That is why I'm voting for Kerry.  What do you think about the health care situation?"

And always remember that you don't have to win the argument, just try to get them into a personal conversation and get them talking.  Ask them questions about their opinions on less polarizing issues like jobs and health care.  Even if they end up hanging up on you, if you got them to think about it for ten seconds a lot of them will vote with us in the end.

  •  Ways to help on election day (none / 1)

I just got back from my MoveOn election day planning meeting in Miami-Dade.  We came up with some ways for Kerry supporters who can't take the whole day off to help out.

We are worried here (as everywhere else I am sure) that the Republicans are going to challenge voters to slow things down and will create long lines.  We want to make sure all MoveOn volunteers have drinks and snacks to hand out to people waiting in line to help convince them to stay there.

We just sent emails to our friends asking them to drop off food/drinks at as many precincts as they can.  If anyone is really inspired, they could also print out stickers that say "I voted for John Kerry" to stick on the water bottles.

Any other ideas out there that we should send around?

      •  I agree (none / 0)

It's going to be tough to do anything while on line.

But if your polling place looks crowded, why not bring a case of water with you, or a pot of coffee if it's cold and people are waiting outside. Take off your button, offer free drinks, smile (and wink) and everyone celebrate the finish line.

If everyone votes we have no complaints. To everyone who votes we offer our thanks.

Voting is the great celebration of citizenship. Enjoy it. Let your neighbors know you're glad they're there.

This has a better chance of turning a Bush voter into a Kerry voter than anything I can think of.

Just remember, no buttons, no signs, no talking about who people are voting for. Just celebrate the act of voting.

        Smile, everybody!

        •  50 feet (none / 0)

In Florida, you cannot campaign withing 50 feet of the door to the room where the voting is taking place, not the door to the building, but the door to the room.  Big to do here in Duval when early voting started, and the Supervisor of Elections has ordered signs to be posted at the 50 foot line.

If you are denied the right to campaign outside of a polling place, and you are more than 50 feet away, call you 800#.  THIS IS A REPUB INTIMIDATION TECHNIQUE.  They are being told to complain about everything, and the 50 feet rule is one of the things.  Do not let them drive you away.  CALL YOUR 800#.  Call the Dems lawyer lines.

election law is different in every state. As a recovering lawyer, I advise you to check with your election board to be sure.

Most states have laws that restrict "electioneering" (supporting or opposing a candidate or ballot issue) at the polls. You have to be physically removed by a certain number of feet from the polling place and/or voters in line.

But if you are just videotaping--without expressing support or opposition to a candidate--it should be fine. It's like a tv station's camera---they have a right to be there as long as they don't interfere with the voting process.

This is anyone's free speech right. And it is the way we insure open, honest and fair elections.

  •  Looking good in so-called conservative suburbs (none / 1)

...here in Portland, Oregon.  I phone banked and yesterday canvassed for Rob Brading, who is running a great campaign against our nasty R speaker of the Legislature out in the eastern suburbs. I was braced for unfriendly, pro-Bush atmosphere (outside of Portland, Eugene and Corvallis, Oregon is very red) but was pleasantly suprised.

K/E signs everywhere, very few Bush signs. Folks were nice even when they had already voted or been canvassed repeatedly.

Plus, the rain held off and the fall colors were gorgeous! Came home energized and optimistic. Of course, Oregon will be blue; but felt good to try to take back our statehouse and to see that our state is not quite as red as  conventional wiz would have it.

Just wondering how many volunteers they are mustering, etc. Is their energy/enthusiasm/numbers anywhere close to ours? I doubt it.

My canvassing partner and I saw a lone Bush-lady out wandering in her red shirt with a bag of fliers.

Her door hanger featured a Happy White Family, picture of soldiers and (I kid you not) a closeup of a stack of money.

On a side note, we also saw an elaborate door-hanger package from the "defense of marriage" ballot initiative folks--complete with CD and multiple color leaflets, all in a plastic bag to protect it from the weather. They had left it on the doorknob of a Dem, but she was older so I figure they are targetting older voters. (

The good news is, polling shows Oregon may be the only state in the country to refuse to enshrine discrimination in its constitution!

I don't know so you'll have to tell me (I'm a furriner), but are the freepies representative of what the GOP activists are doing? Because I was over there reading, and unless I am missing something, they are so much less serious about GOTV than anyone here. They have these stupid threads with bad jokes in them and they have been asking each other 1. "have you voted?" 2."did you get anyone else to vote" (pround answer:1. yes. 2.yes,my mom). If this is typical, then......they are in trouble.

I enjoyed reading that they also think that FOX TV is part of the liberal media conspiracy because it had one poll where Kerry was ahead. These people are amusing in a scary sort of way.

Spent yesterday calling environmental voters in the Philadelphia area with Clean Water Action, and convinced one fence-sitter that Kerry was in fact NOT a supporter of terrorism.

Spending today calling voters in Ohio, also through ACT, and will do the same tomorrow. Also have been obsessively reading this website recently (one of the dreaded newbies) but it's been a great source of inspiration to GOTV!!!

just back in from some GOTV for MoveOn.  I think you can be persuasive sometimes.  I'm in Maine and this morning I talked with a French Catholic eldery woman who was conflcited about this election.  She didn't want to vote for president at all because She is against abortion, but doesn't like the war or Bush's economic policies.  So I told her this true story.  My 35 year old sister recently found out she has a serious birth defect where she has only one kidney, 1/2 uterus, one fallopian tube and one misshapen ovary that was attached to an undifferentiated mass of tissue.  She had been struggling with abdominal pain for year where doctors discovered this (Yes, she didn't have insurance for a long time.)  Her doctor told her she could have died if she carried a baby and her uterus burst.  She's hopping mad that GWB would take that decision out of her and her doctor's hands.  She recently had a hysterectomy.  So me and this woman talked about this.  I gave some info from MoveOn and discussed the impact that increased health insurance and real help for education would have on the kids in her working class neighborhood, real Medicare reform, etc.  She thanked me for having a calm rational discussion with her.  She felt that she hadn't heard a thoughtful discussion of the issues before because she can't get that on TV.  She appreciated a neighbor talking to her.  I think she's leaning towards Kerry now.  So there's still work to be done.  Get out there and talk to people, your neighbors.  The overwhelming majority appreciate it.

  •  Report from Broward (none / 1)

I've been working at early voting at the Lauderhill Mall in Broward this weekend.  It is utterly amazing: I don't estimate crowds well, especially when they're in several incredibly long lines, but to me it looks like thousands of people were waiting patiently up to 2 hours to vote.  I used to live in this neighborhood, so I know it well, and I would guess 90% or more of the votes are for Kerry.  For one thing, nearly everyone is African- or Caribbean-American.  What's different in Broward demographics is that since 2000, the county's black population has increased by 20% and its white non-Hispanic population has decreased by 5%.  I think that will boost Kerry's margin coming out of FL's most Democratic county, especially given the incredible turnout and enthusiasm I've seen here.  Only three Bush people in evidence (also African-Americans) and they were taunted by a group of little kids chanting "Bush is scary/Vote for Kerry!"

No evidence at all of voter intimidation, challenges to people voting, or anything like that.  The Supervisor of Elections seems to be doing everything she can to make this work.  Yesterday the Sun-Sentinel's political columnist accused her office of being taken over in "a coup by the Democratic party."  It's too bad about the missing absentee ballots, but hopefully this huge turnout will make up for whatever votes were lost and more.

On a personal note, I have an 85-year-old very Jewish aunt in Miami-Dade who had planned all along to vote for Bush because of Israel. She early-voted on Friday and in the end she switched to Kerry after her son, my cousin, convinced her, I suppose, that Kerry would be just as craven in not standing up to Ariel Sharon as Bush has been.

  •  "Sure-fire" Rep states besieged by Dems (none / 0)

At American Street, Russ Barnes reports from "Tobacco Road" --Durham, NC:

Early voting has ended in North Carolina, and it was a smashing success. I voted last Monday at one of Durham's four One Stop voting sites, a junior high school down the street from my house, and the line ran through the lobby and just out the front doors. Every day thereafter, when I drove past it to and from work, the line was longer than the day before. By Friday, it was stretching around the building. The Durham Herald-Sun reports that about 1/3 of registered voters in Durham County (152, 719 registered voters) and neighboring Orange County (95,570) cast early ballots. Similar rates prevailed for surrounding counties. This area is easily the most strongly Democratic part of North Carolina; Kerry stickers and signs vastly outnumber Bush ones. Heavy turnout here is good news for Democrats all the way down the ballot. And who is turning out? Durham's Board of Elections director said, "We have a lot of young people voting, which I have never seen before. I think it's wonderful."

Orange County is home to UNC-Chapel Hill (ahem - BOOYAH!), while Durham County hosts Duke and NC Central. College students, traditionally hard to mobilize here, have come out in droves. The useful comparison is to voting rates in Winston-Salem, a strongly conservative city and home to GOP Senate candidate Richard Burr. With 212,289 registered voters in the county, only 12% - 24,579 - showed up early. Statewide, over a million early ballots were cast, about 20% of the state's 5.5 million registered voters. The Democratic areas are far outstripping the rest of the state.

Melanie responds from Virginia: "I'm seeing changes in my state that will bring a close election in Virginia, which is becoming a swing state."  She goes on to say:

Local legend has it that if the Redskins win their last home game before the presidential election, the incumbent wins. This has been true for the last 17 presidential contests, before the `Skins came to Washington. Right now, the Packers are shredding the Skins, 20-7 halfway through the third quarter.

The only suspense for me Tuesday night will be in the exit polling: I'm going to be very curious to see how the military vote, a big part of Virginia, breaks out. I'm hearing enlisted are going heavily for Kerry.

  •  A vote for Badnarik is a vote against Bush (none / 0)

Democrats should work to make sure Republicans know that even if they can't vote for Kerry that they have a conservative alternative to Bush.  The NY Times recognizes Michael Badnarikas a threat to Bush:
    ------------
Mr. Badnarik is the presidential candidate of the Libertarian Party, which says he could "Naderize" Mr. Bush. A recent Zogby/Reuters national poll showed him tied with Ralph Nader at one percentage point each - not much, but possibly critical. Unlike Mr. Nader, Mr. Badnarik is on the ballot of every battleground state except New Hampshire.

"If we have a rerun of Florida 2000 in Pennsylvania, Michael Badnarik could be the kingmaker by drawing independent and Republican votes from Bush," said Larry Jacobs, director of the 2004 Election Project at the Humphrey Institute of the University of Minnesota, which has been tracking third-party candidates.
