America Coming Together has partnered with Party For America to enlist people like YOU to make GOTV calls to registered Democrats in the battleground states.
As of 1 a.m. this morning, 134,000 calls have already gone out. Help from people like YOU can up that number into the millions. And it's amazingly easy to do (only 3 steps necessary)...
1. Go to Party For America. Here's what you'll see...
2. Click 'Start Here' and you're taken to the sign-up page (which includes a sample phone script)...
Fill in your name, email, zip code and phone number (the phone number will only be used if there are questions about your calls). Then click 'Next' and you'll be signed up and taken to a 'thank you' page...
THAT'S ALL IT TAKES! You will be sent a phone list of 50 registered Democrats from a battle ground state. Mine was Ohio and the list arrived in my email within minutes.
PLUS you can get up to two lists per day, and have an impact on 100 voters! That means you could reach up to 300 people in vital battleground states over the next three days.
If you're wondering why calling registered Democrats would make a difference on people showing up at the polls, it's because person-to-person contact DOES make a huge difference in getting out the vote.
And here's an example of why. Say for instance that I asked you to RECOMMEND THIS DIARY so that it would end up on the Recommended Diaries list and help spur thousands or even tens of thousands more GOTV calls. That simple request from one caring person to another is likely to have an effect.
So, enough said. Just click on the link to sign up and get started.

And the great thing is anyone can do it. And consider that if just 1,000 Kossacks sign up, that could equal 100,000 extra GOTV calls per day in these critical states in this critical election.

Three were bad numbers, 3 were busy (I'll try again later), about 12 said they always vote for Democrats, and about 5 said they would not vote for Democrats.
I hope more people do this. It only took about 1 1/2 hours to call the 50 numbers.

Remember, since 1936 the Redskins have correctly predicted the winner of the White House. It is a fluke, I know, but it is something people believe in.
When the Redskins lose their last home game before the election, the party in the White House loses the White House, when they win, the incumbant party wins.

When I was canvassing infrequent voters for MoveOn I went to a house that wasn't on the list with a Kerry sign in the yard and asked to use their bathroom. No problem.
Don't underestimate the power of individual contacts. I just called a student who had signed off as a definite Kerry supporter, but with only two days to go she didn't know where she was supposed to vote. I emailed her all the info, including a map... it's that kind of effort at the margin that makes the difference.

Our field director tells us about a race down in Florida in 2002 where the candidate stopped GOTV phone calls a few days before the election because people were complaining about the calls.
She ended up losing by just a few hundred votes.
The improtant thing to remember is: REGULAR VOTERS DO NOT GET GOTV CALLS.
Voters targetted for GOTV are infrequent voting Democrats. They're getting calls because they will not vote otherwise.
That's why it doesn't matter if you piss off a few people into not voting because they likely weren't going to bother anyways.
If you vote regularly, you won't get phone calls telling you to go vote.

The memorial service as a whole was one the more amazing things I have ever seen in my life. On zero days notice, tens of thousands of Minnesotans wrapped around block after block, waiting in line to commemorate the amazing man that he was.
Now, what does this have to do with GOTV efforts? Uh, nothing. The guy up thread is bizarrely off topic, and his logic is almost Ann Coulterish.

I was calling Democrats, Independents, and Others (can't remember that code designation), Republicans are not called, though I think there should have been a massive drive to contact them once.
Three of my democrats were voting for Bush, 42 were voting for Kerry, and 5 had not even opened the ballot, though they had it for at least 2 weeks. I am an old, retied clergyman (for real), so I was eager to talk with them about their procrastination, it was interesting. Two of them will not vote, they seemed to be mentally challenged, one even said they want to think another week about it. (Hmmm!) The other three were not going to vote for Bush, they each had issues with Kerry, claiming they did not know where he stood on issues such as African genocide, American poverty, and education. Answered there questions and referred each to the DNC platform. But, these young, new voters were thinking about their responsibility.
Most of my callers were first-time voters, very excited and Pro-Kerry. A bunch of these voters not reached were probably at the game watching Oregon stomp Washington!
I just got called to do some out-of-state GOTV this evening. It is not to late for any of you to help out!

I hope that those driving the GOTV have learned what I understand to be the lessons from Dean's amateurish overkill in Iowa in February. Are there good web references with call-banking pointers?
It was clear to me the last time I phone banked that it is important to give people some deliberate, focused coaching (beyond just handing them a script) and have someone performing some level of ongoing quality assurance on the outgoing calls.

My daughter and I went around today with posters with that message, to houses with Kerry signs, asking those people to put the signs out Monday night or Tuesday morning.
Everyone was happy to do it. Everyone said they were getting out the vote. One guy screamed from his home-office, "we're gonna win!"
Everyone was smiling. Everyone knows. And everyone is working for the blessed day.

Have a two or three sentence explanation about why this election is so important for you or your family personally. This will cut through the crap with anyone who is undecided, angry about you calling for the hundreth time, angry because they disagree with you, or who is thinking about not voting.
Whenever I get anyone difficult on a phone I always drop back to, "Sir, I am just volunteering my time because so many members of my family have lost their health care over the past four years. My aunt and uncle, my cousins, and my mother all NEED and affordable health care plan, and John Kerry and John Edwards are fighting for that. That is why I'm voting for Kerry. What do you think about the health care situation?"
And always remember that you don't have to win the argument, just try to get them into a personal conversation and get them talking. Ask them questions about their opinions on less polarizing issues like jobs and health care. Even if they end up hanging up on you, if you got them to think about it for ten seconds a lot of them will vote with us in the end.
by Iowa and California on Sun Oct 31, 2004 at 12:17:12 PM PDT
We are worried here (as everywhere else I am sure) that the Republicans are going to challenge voters to slow things down and will create long lines. We want to make sure all MoveOn volunteers have drinks and snacks to hand out to people waiting in line to help convince them to stay there.
We just sent emails to our friends asking them to drop off food/drinks at as many precincts as they can. If anyone is really inspired, they could also print out stickers that say "I voted for John Kerry" to stick on the water bottles.
Any other ideas out there that we should send around?

But if your polling place looks crowded, why not bring a case of water with you, or a pot of coffee if it's cold and people are waiting outside. Take off your button, offer free drinks, smile (and wink) and everyone celebrate the finish line.
If everyone votes we have no complaints. To everyone who votes we offer our thanks.
Voting is the great celebration of citizenship. Enjoy it. Let your neighbors know you're glad they're there.
This has a better chance of turning a Bush voter into a Kerry voter than anything I can think of.
Just remember, no buttons, no signs, no talking about who people are voting for. Just celebrate the act of voting.
Smile, everybody!

Most states have laws that restrict "electioneering" (supporting or opposing a candidate or ballot issue) at the polls. You have to be physically removed by a certain number of feet from the polling place and/or voters in line.
But if you are just videotaping--without expressing support or opposition to a candidate--it should be fine. It's like a tv station's camera---they have a right to be there as long as they don't interfere with the voting process.
This is anyone's free speech right. And it is the way we insure open, honest and fair elections.

Plus, the rain held off and the fall colors were gorgeous! Came home energized and optimistic. Of course, Oregon will be blue; but felt good to try to take back our statehouse and to see that our state is not quite as red as conventional wiz would have it.
Thank you, Howard Dean!

My canvassing partner and I saw a lone Bush-lady out wandering in her red shirt with a bag of fliers.
Her door hanger featured a Happy White Family, picture of soldiers and (I kid you not) a closeup of a stack of money.
On a side note, we also saw an elaborate door-hanger package from the "defense of marriage" ballot initiative folks--complete with CD and multiple color leaflets, all in a plastic bag to protect it from the weather. They had left it on the doorknob of a Dem, but she was older so I figure they are targetting older voters. (
The good news is, polling shows Oregon may be the only state in the country to refuse to enshrine discrimination in its constitution!

I enjoyed reading that they also think that FOX TV is part of the liberal media conspiracy because it had one poll where Kerry was ahead. These people are amusing in a scary sort of way.

Spent last week calling voters in Florida through America Coming Together- lots and lots of people had already voted.
Spent yesterday calling environmental voters in the Philadelphia area with Clean Water Action, and convinced one fence-sitter that Kerry was in fact NOT a supporter of terrorism.
Spending today calling voters in Ohio, also through ACT, and will do the same tomorrow. Also have been obsessively reading this website recently (one of the dreaded newbies) but it's been a great source of inspiration to GOTV!!!

As mentioned above, it's so important to GOTV in this homestretch- I, too, have called people who weren't sure of their polling location, ID requirements, prov. ballots, etc... and they mostly welcomed the calls and urged us on!
I actually heard Tucker Carlson say this morning that the people who despise Bush far outnumber those who love him- that's why they've waited in lines for up to 3 hours to vote him out!!! I couldn't agree more! GOTV!!!!

No evidence at all of voter intimidation, challenges to people voting, or anything like that. The Supervisor of Elections seems to be doing everything she can to make this work. Yesterday the Sun-Sentinel's political columnist accused her office of being taken over in "a coup by the Democratic party." It's too bad about the missing absentee ballots, but hopefully this huge turnout will make up for whatever votes were lost and more.
On a personal note, I have an 85-year-old very Jewish aunt in Miami-Dade who had planned all along to vote for Bush because of Israel. She early-voted on Friday and in the end she switched to Kerry after her son, my cousin, convinced her, I suppose, that Kerry would be just as craven in not standing up to Ariel Sharon as Bush has been.

Early voting has ended in North Carolina, and it was a smashing success. I voted last Monday at one of Durham's four One Stop voting sites, a junior high school down the street from my house, and the line ran through the lobby and just out the front doors. Every day thereafter, when I drove past it to and from work, the line was longer than the day before. By Friday, it was stretching around the building. The Durham Herald-Sun reports that about 1/3 of registered voters in Durham County (152, 719 registered voters) and neighboring Orange County (95,570) cast early ballots. Similar rates prevailed for surrounding counties. This area is easily the most strongly Democratic part of North Carolina; Kerry stickers and signs vastly outnumber Bush ones. Heavy turnout here is good news for Democrats all the way down the ballot. And who is turning out? Durham's Board of Elections director said, "We have a lot of young people voting, which I have never seen before. I think it's wonderful." Orange County is home to UNC-Chapel Hill (ahem - BOOYAH!), while Durham County hosts Duke and NC Central. College students, traditionally hard to mobilize here, have come out in droves. The useful comparison is to voting rates in Winston-Salem, a strongly conservative city and home to GOP Senate candidate Richard Burr. With 212,289 registered voters in the county, only 12% - 24,579 - showed up early. Statewide, over a million early ballots were cast, about 20% of the state's 5.5 million registered voters. The Democratic areas are far outstripping the rest of the state.

Melanie responds from Virginia: "I'm seeing changes in my state that will bring a close election in Virginia, which is becoming a swing state." She goes on to say:
Local legend has it that if the Redskins win their last home game before the presidential election, the incumbent wins. This has been true for the last 17 presidential contests, before the `Skins came to Washington. Right now, the Packers are shredding the Skins, 20-7 halfway through the third quarter. The only suspense for me Tuesday night will be in the exit polling: I'm going to be very curious to see how the military vote, a big part of Virginia, breaks out. I'm hearing enlisted are going heavily for Kerry.

"If we have a rerun of Florida 2000 in Pennsylvania, Michael Badnarik could be the kingmaker by drawing independent and Republican votes from Bush," said Larry Jacobs, director of the 2004 Election Project at the Humphrey Institute of the University of Minnesota, which has been tracking third-party candidates. -------------
