Divisiveness Question: An Edwards Opportunity Missed

Tue Oct 05, 2004 at 07:48:16 PM PDT

I only heard the last part of the debate as I drove home from class tonight, but it seemed there was a golden opportunity missed on the question of being a uniter vs. a divided nation.

Cheney's answer focused solely on Congress.  It was as though the voters, the people of the US didn't exist.  There was no acknowledgement of the deep anger across the country.  No acknowledgement of the huge leadership gap and aggressive acts of divisiveness from the Republicans since 2000.  All that mattered was which bills Congress worked together on.  Wonk insider issues.

It was a lobbed softball ready for Edwards to hit out of the park, and it was the last question of the debate.  Edwards had a chance to contrast Bush/Cheney's focus on politics and insider arguments versus a vision of creating a united, thriving nation.  Instead, he talked about the K/E health care plan.

It was the last question.  I wish the debate could have ended with a withering Edwards attack...

  •  Secrecy and backstabbing (none / 1)

I think the other opportunity he missed on that point was the divisivness caused by the secrecy and backstabbing of trhe Republicans -- starting with Cheney's Energy Task Force and the Medicare Reform bill and other bills drafted with no Democrtaic particpation. Also the backstabbing such as No Child Left Behind where the bill passed but the funding was not provided (this was discussed, but not in this context.
