For the last four months, my friend and I have had heated discussions that went into the wee hours. More often then not, voices were raised and too much alcohol was consumed, but it was never hostile. Some of you may think this is torture, but my friend and I have a lot of respect for one another and both felt like the conversations made us think harder about our ideas. I felt particularly challenged because while I truly believe in John Kerry, I passionately detest George W. Bush and I didn't want to present my case as simply Anti-Bush. I wanted the focus to be much more pro-Kerry but as you all know fighting the smear can be very tough.
Then something happened! After the debates I noticed that my friend was becoming less and less vigorous in his support of Bush. He was truly appalled by Bush's stupidity and arrogance. He couldn't believe how poorly he presented himself. I sensed an opening! For the first time, I began to think I might be able to get through to him. More below...
I had only recently discovered Daily Kos at that point but had I not, my friend might still be voting for Bush. I was able to formulate compelling arguments against Bush and for Kerry because of the discussions that happen here and the insightful diaries written, especially those about Republicans and true conservatives against Bush. So pat yourselves on the back because you have provided me and my friend great insight!
In the end, what was most difficult for my friend to overcome was the idea that John Kerry might be too anti-war in a time when America is at war and still threatened. Well, after several discussions about the Generals supporting Kerry and the reasons for some of Kerry's votes, he still wasn't totally convinced. I thought for sure at this point it was over, he would vote for Bush.
When he called this morning to tell me, he thanked me for my friendship and for taking the time I have to talk with him and present such strong arguments. I asked what made him change his mind and he said it was a variety of things; The Supreme Court ( he may be a bit of a hawk, but he fears a too socially conservative Court), the Bin Laden tape ( not so much the tape but the reminder of that failure), and finally the tax cuts and NCLB ( he is a teacher who busts his ass and makes no $$). Surprised, I asked him about foreign policy. He said that while he was still suspicious of Kerry, he thought it was time to give someone else a shot.
I told him I was proud of him and I loved him, he said he loved me too and to tell John Kerry he got his vote--now don't be a wimp! I think John Kerry can live with that request.
Thank you all for helping to accomplish this small victory, I am certain we will see it play out in multiples today and celebrate it tonight!
