I keep hearing and reading of Progressives threatening to move abroad now. Even as a joke, I find this repugnant.
When you say you're thinking of emigrating just because your candidate lost the election, what you're really saying is, "I don't really care about this country and its ideals, I care about ME." If you really think you'll be better off somewhere else, please go there immediately. And when things don't go your way there five or ten or fifteen years from now, will you stay and work to make change, or will you just move to a new country again? In my eyes, that kind of selfishness is the worst kind of cowardice.
If you're serious about leaving, so be it. Get the hell out, but don't even think of coming back if and when things get better, because you will not be welcome then. I for one will not give up. I believe in 95% of the ideals, (mostly excluding the religious bits) the notions of liberty and justice for all, upon which this country was founded. I am willing to fight to preserve and/or recover those rights, whatever it takes.
My friends in the military didn't spend years in the service helping to preserve this country for people who think only of their own personal safety and comfort and run for the border when the shit hits the fan.
Do I suffer from rampant nationalism? My country, right or wrong? Hell no! Anyone who can entertain that fantasy for even a moment doesn't know me at all. Yes, we got problems. Yes, the present establishment is fucked up, on both sides of the political aisle. Yes, we are losing freedoms on an almost daily basis. Yes, a large percentage of the world is pissed off at us. Yes, those in power are doing bad things in other countries in the hallowed name of "security".*
So, I have one question for you: how will giving up and running away help to change all that and make the world a better place?
Democracy is not something you believe in or a place to hang your hat, it is something you do. You participate. If you stop doing it, democracy crumbles. - Abbie Hoffman

* note that our elected officials are doing it in large part because most of the American people are afraid of being hurt or killed - collectively, we will do almost anything to almost anyone (so long as we don't know them personally) to avoid bloodshed on our own soil, no matter the human cost to others. Cowards!
