Happy to have a conversation going with
Lifer, who has expectedly smart things to say about my
post on crafting a new Democratic vocabulary. He's right that we need to be careful about our frames. I'm not sure, though, that "freedom" counts as a "warrior word," at least not necessarily. If it does, we're in worse shape than I thought.
On his point about forgetting the last two decades: systematically defining freedom as nondomination, as best as I can tell, started with Pettit and Skinner in 1997 and 1998. Whatever successes and failures the left's had in the language "tug-of-war" (warrior-word alert), I'm not sure it's ever gone after the big fish like freedom. Am I right on this?
Nurturers fish, right?
