The media filter is our big problem. Because of the success of Fox -- and the stupid, desparate aping of Fox by CNN and MSNBC in hopes to get some of their audience -- we now have a constant multi-billion branding campaign for the "morals" point of view in this country. We should not, by the way, be surprised by this aping (this is what media executives do across the board -- copy success).
And, the results of this election will make the coverage even worse as they confirm that the elite media "doesn't get it" because they didn't see that the country really likes Bush. Remember, Bush got almost zero newspaper endorsements etc. Of course, almost no one reads newspapers in this country anymore (what matters is TV) but the GOPs and their friends will use this result to drive a stake into any resistance in the media elite to accepting their insane world views.
Our only hope is to create a market for an alternative viewpoint. That is happening with Air America, Jon Stewart and the success of the liberal blogosphere (and blogads). The challenge for us is to figure out how we can get on local cable line-ups. Foxnews got on because Murdoch is very very powerful in the media world (he basically forced Comcast, Time Warner Cable and others politically to carry Fox News). So, we're going to need to find a way around this .
The way around this is to financially support our current liberal media outlets and prove that there is a market. For example, right now, we could start an Air America/XM satellite radio campaign. Demand a subscription option that shows that we are Air America (as opposed to XM subscribers). If we can get a million people to do this (right now, XM has 2 million subs) we would get the media venture capitalists to wake up and pay attention and realize that "hey, maybe these folks would also buy a premium liberal channel" and then maybe get HBO or someone else to do this (and then we have to buy that). Then, maybe we'll find a way on the basic tier (where we really need to be).
