FOX: Kerry leads Bush by 5 in FL

Mon Nov 01, 2004 at 10:52:59 AM PDT

ALL FLORIDA OPEN THREAD

Hey, you know it's gotta be both fair and balanced: According to Fox News -- boy, do I love starting sentences that way -- Kerry leads Bush by five points in Florida, and by two points nationally, 48-46 percent.

Funny, but when Bush was leading by two points nationally two days ago, the blurb on their homepage said Bush was winning by 2. Now it calls the results, more generously, "Polarized Electorate." Bush was leading in the Fox poll by five points nationally about a week ago. But I'm sure Fred, Mort, Bill K., Bill O., Sean, Brit and Tony will all lead tonight's commentaries with "Bush is surging" memes anyway.

Facts, as Reagan said, are stubborn things. So why let them get in the way? To be a Republican, you must be willing to ignore all contradictory evidence and blunder ahead. It's more liberating that way. Freedom, if you will, on the march.

Don't believe the hype! Faux is just pushing these numbers so that the freepers could get all riled up and run to the polls. They are trying to keep the base motivated, but believe me when the freepers see the lines tomorrow in Florida they are going to leave quickly. Believe that!!!

    •  I dunno (none / 0)

Sounds good and all, but who watches Fox?  This might just have the effect of discouraging Bush voters, particularly when they see the long line.. you gonna wait 4 hours in line just to vote for a looser?  Hard to say it keeps one side from voting, but not the other... except the factor of who is watching.

Well, now I believe it. If Bush is only pulling 46 nationwide in a FOX poll the day before the election, he is not doing that well at all. Not well. Nope. Forget the 2-point within the MOE spread.

Incumbent Republican. 46. Fox Poll. Likely voters. God only knows what the Registered Voters look like, it must be a Bush disaster.

  •  Couldn't Help Notice the Florida Paragraph (none / 0)

Actually--I had to TRY to notice the Florida paragraph--it was very short...just one sentence!  Meanwhile, they're trying to play up Iowa (even though that one poll of early voters showed Kerry with an 11-point lead there over Bush).

  •  I'm glad for the positive data in FL (none / 0)

but they also posted data today with Bush up in IA, WI and OH.  Good news is that only FL and IA are outside the MoE for their state polls.  We know OH is close, and WI is likely an outlier.  They didn't post any RV data that I could find for the state polls, so who knows how strong the effect of the LV screen was this time.
  •  Bush is still surging (none / 1)

Funny, hasn't he been surging for several months now? And yet he still can't do any better than what, 48-49%

Reminds me of the story of how the German people knew that the Nazis were losing the war - news reports of their many glorious victories in 1944-45 kept referring to places closer and closer to home.

  •  You got that wrong (none / 0)

I would believe what they are saying folks. It is too late to motivate the base with the Kerry is "surging" meme. In fact historically that would depress turn out because the losing side of a surge gets demoralized.

Also this is Fox's last poll so no more chance to reverse it.

I think they are making sure they are a player no matter what the outcome.

    •  There is a tendency here (4.00 / 3)

to look positives as negatives, and negatives as even worse than that. We say that we are reality based- and yet when push comes to shove it's al about what we feel rather than the facts. There is a bit of paranoia in thinking someone is ALWAYS out to get you as some people on this site feel.

This is all to say that I liked your post b/c it went with some facts about who we are dealing with and their strategies rather than going knee-jerk into why we should despair and fear this result. I swear I agree with a lot of the people on here about policies, but I hope are a little bit more optimistic at parties :)

I think this a sign of the realities of the race- Fox is at the end of the day a media company who wants to have good ratings. They will manipulate in the Rs favor as far as they can, but even they dont want  to look clueless to their audience

  •  Cherry picking (none / 0)

You shouldn't really cherry pick just the Florida and nationals polls.  If you think this is good news, and thus believe those polls, you must give credence to Fox showing Bush up 3 in OH and WI and up 4 in IA.
  •  Last last? (none / 0)

Perhaps this is the last last-ditch ploy: attempt to suppress Democratic turnout by instilling over confidence. Who better than Faux? If so, they are truly to the bottom of the Rovian barrel. Parenthetically, I think the Kerry people have been very tight-lipped about their own, internal numbers so as to avoid any such effect...
  •  Palm Beach County Update (4.00 / 2)

    Mid-day Kos check in.

Started the day in WPB at 7 to set up for a Betty Castor Rally with Bob Graham,Jimmy Buffett and local elected officials.  Good showing, about 200+ for the 8 am rally.

Distributed Castor yard signs for polling places, then headed out for  visibility at the Supervisor of Elections office on Congress in Delray Beach.  My first thought was that things must be going well since there was no line outside the building...first time in over 2 weeks.  Then I find out that the lines are all inside the building, snaking up and around the 2nd floor.  The reason?  A woman passed out from heat stroke (it's mid-80's here today) so they moved the entire line inside, according to the Legal Rep onsite.

Today was the first time I've seen more than 1 Bush supporter. Most of the time it's been 1 Bush supporter for every 3 or 4 Kerry supporters.  One of the local stations (12) was there.  Did visibility on the street for 90 minutes.  Then off to check out the EV site on Atlantic Ave. Lines around the bldg there.  Heading back out to do visbility there.  Afterwards canvassing for Castor, then Betty and John Edwards tonite in Pompano Beach.

    Kerry/Edwards/Castor fever is STRONG!

    More later tonite!

  •  Trick? (none / 0)

Could it be possible that Fox is trying to get the Dems to ease up, with victory all but assured?
  •  Already voted numbers... (none / 0)

According to this diary, Kerry leads nationwide among early voters 48-43 in this Fox poll.

If those already voted numbers are anywhere close to accurate, they're fucking awesome. There is more early voting in red states (Bush won states with early voting by 8 points in 2000) and Republicans tend to do quite a bit better in early and absentee voting historically (Bush went into election day with a something like a 10 point lead in 2000).

I expected that Kerry would go into election day behind by 5-8 points nationally in early voting numbers (due to the two factors above), but maybe tied or ahead in some of the swing states like Florida.

According to the PDF, the people who've already voted are 27% of the likely voters (out of 1200 total LV) or 24% of the registered voters (1400 RV). That's 324 likely voters or 336 registered voters (I doubt "already voted" people are not being considered likely voters; the difference is probably due to rounding). That's a MOE of 5.5%, and an 83% chance that the lead is "real" and not due to sampling error.

  •  I don't trust Fox at all.. (none / 0)

I'd love to believe this is true but I suspect it's a really lame, desperate, GOTV effort. They've been trying to scare voters all along, this is just another attempt.

Electoral prediction with undecideds and turnout: Kerry 323 EV, Bush 215 EV (probability map)

Popular vote prediction with undecideds and turnout: Kerry 50.3%, Bush 47.7%, Nader/other 2%

With undecided voters assigned. Undecided voters typically end up voting against the incumbent. In previous presidential races this has given a 2.5 ± 2.0% advantage to the challenger. I currently estimate that 3.0% of voters are undecided. A 3-1 Kerry-Bush split gives a +1.5% net advantage to Kerry. This leads to a median EV estimate: counting undecided voters, Kerry 280 EV, Bush 258 EV, and a nominal Kerry win probability of 71%, or 2.4-1 in Kerry's favor.

Turnout estimates and other corrections. The principal factor not measured by polls is turnout. Pollsters ask respondents questions to determine if they are likely to vote. *However, this cannot capture efforts by voter turnout organizations. In addition, newly registered voters have no track record. ** Finally, telephone polls may not accurately sample the voting population. I estimate that these factors sum to an advantage in battleground states of 2 to 3% for Kerry. As I am sure you are all aware, this number cannot be known with certainty. With that caveat in mind, I use +2.5% as my turnout figure. Combined with the +1.5% undecided allocation this makes a +4.0% bias as plugged into the MATLAB script. This leads to my final prediction. Predicted electoral outcome (11/1/2004 noon EST): Kerry 323 EV, Bush 215 EV, nominal Kerry win probability near 100%.

The bottom line is that a massive turnout IS happening. Do we ALL agree?

    does anyone see a 51 or 52% turnout? I see a 61% turnout (130 million votes cast)

we see PROOF of this massive turnout in several sates -- FL OH IA and NC. 2 hours long lines at Midday.

the  MSM  can spin it all they wantt... The massive turnout comes from 3 sources and ONLY three sources.

    1. 18-29 years old who fear a draft
    2. 1st time voters
    3. occasional Voters

all three groups heavily favor Kerry. To be sure the 18 - 29 year old voters are often 15% of the overall vote... but this time it appears to be different.

In FL dems and GOP Both registered the ame amount of voters. But nader who got 100,000 votes in 2000 might get 10-15,000 this time. All those other votes are going to Kerry.

There is NO "hidden" right wing or Christian conservative vote out there for Bush to pull to counter 1 2 and 3.
If  we   assume  Bush takes  NM and Kerry takes   NH     then    IF   Kerry  takes  Fl... Bush   needs  IA and WI  just to get a  tie...

Remember folks even a dolt like Mike Dukakis carried IA and WI in 1988 and these states have democratic ever since.

  •  My first post from texas (3.66 / 3)

Well this is my first post on Kos after lurking for many days. I am a fiscally conservative, socially Libertarian Texan, who would not vote for GDuuuuhbya if he were the last "man" ( and i use that term loosely)  on earth. Last election I voted for Harry Brown, but this time i have already voted for John Kerry after waiting 2 hours in line to vote early. And this wait was in a small Texas conservative town, and as someone else has pointed out " no-one waits in line in the hot Texas sun for two hours to vote for the incumbant". I don't think Bush will lose Texas, but he better watch out, its gonna be close.
I was gonna vote Libertarian again until i read several articles about Kerry, especially the one from the daughter of the fellow vietnam vet who'se family he has watched over these many years since their fathers death in Vietnam.  And listening to his daughters talk about him at the convention sealed the deal for me. The story about him and the hamster said more about the heart of the man, than anything Gduuuuhbya has done in his entire pathetic existence.
I take an informal "pick-up" poll on my 45 mile drive home through Austin every day, and I have been nothing but astonished at what I have observed. The pick-up poll consists of reading the bumper and back window stickers on pick-em-up trucks while i am driving. The poll so far is running 75% Kerry, 25% Bush with a margin of error, of whether or not I'm about to rear-end someone. I can't tell you the number of time I Have seen a Kerry sticker on the window of a beat-up pickup with guns in the back window, and a redneck at the wheel ( of which I number myself). I think the world is gonna be pleasently pleased tomorrow.
