According to the data in this
website used in
this post , the margin that Bush won in many states decreased from 2000, and Kerry increased the margin of victory from 2000 for Democrats.
In Colorado for example: Bush won with an 8.36% margin over Gore in 2000, but this year he won with a 6.45% margin over Kerry, a difference of -1.91%.
Other states where Bush's margin decreased.
Alaska:-4.15%
Idaho: -1.41%
Maine: -2.91%
Minnesota: -1.05%
Montana: -4.54%
Nevada: -.91%
New Hampshire (from for Bush to for Kerry): -2.65%
North Carolina: -.22%
North Dakota: -.22%
Ohio: -1.12%
Oregon -3.49%
South Dakota: -1.27%
Vermont: -10.28%
Washington: -1.51%
Wisconsin: -.24%
Washington DC: -3.88%
Wyoming: -.22%
So as you can plainly see, Bush's margin decreased or Kerry's gain increased in 18 states over the 2000 election, many of them conservative western states. I am sure the reverse it true in many of the states that Kerry got. However, its interesting to look at it from this point of view as well, and see that Bush didn't win as clear of a mandate in many states as he thinks he did
