suicide bombing:
Two separate suicide car bombings left at least 26 people dead in Iraq today, and the bodies of 12 men bearing clear signs of torture were found in a Baghdad garbage dump.
In one attack, in Suwayra, a mixed Shiite and Sunni market town about 30 miles south of Baghdad, at least 16 people were killed and 36 were wounded, all of them civilians, an Interior Ministry official said. Suwayra is in an area known as the Triangle of Death because of the many insurgent attacks and kidnappings that have been carried out there.
Reuters quoted a local hospital official as saying that at least 58 people were killed in the blast near the town's crowded marketplace, but this could not immediately be confirmed.
Another bomber struck in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, 110 miles north of Baghdad, driving his vehicle into a bus carrying policemen. Ten policemen were killed and three were wounded, an official at the Interior Ministry said. Five civilians were also wounded.
The new violence was a clear sign that the Sunni-led insurgents are intent on pressing their efforts to destabilize Iraq's eight-day-old democratic government.
A police captain who spoke on the condition that he not be identified said the 12 bodies found in a poor district of northeast Baghdad seemed to be those of men in their mid-20's. They were discovered after a local resident heard shooting at about 4 a.m. local time and called the police, the captain said.
These stories demonstrate that the security situation is not improving and the United States badly needs to rethink its strategy for a manageable situation in Iraq. the tragedy continues.
