The Ayatollah, however, was able to pass an Islamic Constitution ... declaring Iraq an Islamic Federal Republic. The IFR constitution looked a lot like the old Saddam Iraq, except for the imposition of Islamic Law over the whole of Iraq.
What could Bush do? The Iraqi people were first divided over their new government, but The Iraqi Islamic Corps, an organization of fundamentalist muslins from around the country, soon brought back the oppressive peace that Saddam had imposed and the reasons for an American occupation became very hard to explain.
The Ayatollah, a Kurdish Shiite names Saladin ibn Mubarak, was wildly popular ... not only in Iraq but in Iran and Syria. His image, the image of the armed imam and his name, the non-Arab liberator of Jerusalem, gained him near mythic status.
Saladin soon demanded US withdrawal. There were riots in Falluja, Basra, and Baghdad ... and in Cairo, Damascus, and Jerusalem. American embassies were surrounded by protesters in Europe, Canada ... in all countries other than China and Russia.
The riots win Baghdad were especially horrible, hundreds of Iraqi dies in the effort to take the US embassy .. among then Reagan Gordon.
Finally, a joint Soviet-Turkish peace keeping force arrived and ...
