Protests are good, but we also have to rejuvenate ourselves. I was shocked to discover that a movie with Liam Neeson was only open in 188 theaters
nationwide compared to The Polar Express at 3,650 theaters[
1]. In the 3 weeks it's been open it's only grossed $826,679 compared to it's $11,000,000 budget[
2]. A movie needs to make 3 times it's budget to be considered sucessful. It's also a fact that movies make the most money in their first weeks and then make progressively less each week. With all of these facts combined the picture is currently grim but we have the power to change it just as MoveOn contributed to Fahrenheit 9/11's sucess.
This movie is great. It's a very positive movie with stars including Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, Chris O'Donnell(Batman), Tim Curry, John Lithgow (3rd Rock from the Sun), and Oliver Platt (The West Wing). We can not allow this movie to fail or more positive coverage of GLBT people and quite frankly just plain old discussion of sex in mainstream films won't happen. Not to mention it's very uplifting and encouraging.
Here's what you can do to help -
go to
movies.yahoo.com and put in your zip code. If Kinsey is playing somewhere you can organize a group to get to do that. Take a break from finals studying and go raise your spirit. If it isn't playing near you, pick a theater most students go to, and start a calling campaign. Then once you get it into the theater, put up flyers advertising it as a movie about sex with these mainstream actors and actresses.
