... then stop giving your tax dollars to them:
The legislative "Faith-Based Initiative" got bogged down in Congress, mainly because some supporters worried that the government funding of religion that it called for might threaten to include Muslims, scientologists, Hare Krishnas, and, pardon the expression, God-knows-who. But that did not stop President Bush. He quickly signed two executive orders that, for many intents and purposes, have achieved the same thing as the legislative proposal would have done - only more surreptitiously, with few in the country being aware of it. That's how the government likes it. Now they can limit the funds to just those that they like, discreetly.
The two orders created a White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives as well as similar offices in eight different Cabinet departments. These offices have so far distributed billions of federal funds to religious groups with no restrictions on how their use may be tied to proselytizing. I was disappointed to learn that not a single member of Congress, not one, has moved to even introduce any legislation to stop this blatant disregard for the constitutional principle of separation of church and state. They are just too cowed by religious groups these days. Where is the courage to stand up for an important right?
Forgive the plug, but, it's here: in a small, 5545-member strong organization called the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF). They are the ONLY people in the nation who are challenging the Bush executive orders. Last summer, they took it to court. I know many may say that even the courts will concede to Bush's plan, but that is defeatism and nihilism not befitting anyone who would bother to read a political blog. The FFRF has won previous legal battles involving government funding of religion, and they can win this one, too. This will likely go all the way to the Supremes, so get on board, and start following it and supporting it now. It is, quite literally, the ONLY HOPE against a growing theocratic movement. Lose this fight, and the floodgates will open for a more intrusive role for religion in the provision of social services.
