Has anyone read the novel "The R document" by Irving Wallace? It is a fiction about an FBI director who seeks to amend the US Constitution and subvert the Bill of Rights for the sake of safety and reducing crime. And he almost succeeds...
The book includes such famous Benjamin Franklin's quotes as
"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety"
and
"A republic, if you can keep it."
The book looks very appropriate for the current situation. Was it discussed at dailyKos diaries? It is a great novel: good plot, characters, and then perhaps actuality... I am surprised that there is so little attention to this book on the internet and media. Highly recommended.
