I live in Orlando and went down to the State Democratic Chair Convention to hear the speeches of the candidates for DNC Chair. It was a job interview format with a five minute introduction and then questions that each had to answer. Those being interviewed included Blanchard, Dean, Ickes, Webb, Kirk, Frost, Rosenberg, and Fowler.
Each was impressive in their own way. If they could work together we'd have a powerhouse party.
Here's my novace assessment of each's interview for the job:
*Howard Dean was by far the most impressive in displaying an understanding of the job and how he would tackle it. I don't think he will win because of back room power plays and it's a pity.
*Blanchard came across as a very good politican working the crowd, but showed no forethought about how he would approach the job.
*Martin Frost was just boring and Ickes was smart and knowledgeable, but did not stand out.
*Webb and Kirk emphasized their experience as mayors. Kirk was quite impressive. Again, neither demonstrated knowledge of the nuts and bolts of the job of DNC Chair or specific plans. Both came across as compromise candidates between Fowler/Dean/Rosenberg for reform and Blanchard/Frost/Ickes for status quo. I'd bet on either of them to get the job. (Remember I have picked a winning candidate in years.)
*Rosenberg had very good ideas and demonstrated the experience, but is so corporate. The politican types seem to play better.
*Fowler has a flair but is too young (wild eyed) for the job. Maybe one day, but not today.
I'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
