To all Kossacks:

I wish to state clearly and emphatically that I apologize for any offensive material that you have viewed in a recent post of mine.

I originally posted what I considered to be a humorous picture, but it appears that the image tag that I used, the URL of the original image was either changed, or the file name on the originating server was changed to something vile.

I regret that many of you have been exposed to indecent material, my original intent was to repeat an image that I had recently seen in Jon Stewart's book "America."

I have lost trusted user status and cannot view what you are now seeing and am relying on the comments that follow in the thread in question.

I appeal to all of you for understanding: I did not post an indecent, obscene or pornographic picture.

I appeal to webmasters who are online to remove the picture.

I regret to have linked directly to a file that could be easily manipulated and please accept that it is beyond my control.

  Much safer not to link to images on sites you don't control. Maybe some folks can go change their 0 ratings--not everyone, because the image really needs to stay hidden--to bring you back.

Man, that totally sucks...you were the victim of an attempt to keep peopel from using his bandwidth. If you visit fif3.com, this (in part) is what it says:

Why I've done it ["it" being manipulating the URL]:
Linking directly to an image hosted on someone else's webserver is bad. It causes excessive traffic and logs and is generally rude. So now, instead of that cute little forum avatar of batboy, now you have goatse. enjoy.
The "goatse" he refers to is, from Wikipedia:

Goatse.cx is one of the most widely known Internet shock sites. Its front page contains an explicit picture, hello.jpg, featuring a man wearing a gold ring on his left hand (and nothing else) manually stretching his anus and rectum to a diameter roughly equal to the width of his hand.
...
The site is commonly linked to by Internet trolls in order to shock unsuspecting users with the image.
I feel bad for you...your follow-up comments were oblivious to what was going on. You'll get your TU status back in no time, though. But in the future PREVIEW your comments before you post them.

  It will be a cache file on your machine until your browser clears it automatically unless you clear it manually.
  How you do this depends on your browser. for Firefox, go to Tools>Options>Privacy You will see "Cache" with a "clear" button. Click on the button to delete all of these files/images etc.

I got, er, "presented" with the picture in question this morning; since I was at the office, I was scrambling to get it OFF my SCREEN but had made a mental note to super-troll it the minute I got home.
This was probably a webmaster at the site in question exercising a nuclear option -- some sites are traffic-constrained and take pains to discourage people from linking their pictures from outside. Usually, this takes the form of a message like "I'm stealing bandwidth from XXX" replacing the original picture. Ways around that include copying the picture & displaying it from your own site, using a link to the picture instead of an IMG tag, or (most polite) link to the page on the site that displays the picture.
Good to hear you got back into the good graces of Kos. I'm recommending the diary in hopes that it stays up a bit longer. We all play fast and loose with image links from time to time; it can be dangerous when we do it on a popular site.

    I would have likely reacted as everyone else did and am sorry to have been the conduit for the image. I am thankful for the zeros that removed the image initially (and this resulted in my never seeing it since my TU status was wiped out).
    I am also alerted to the idea of "stealing bandwidth" which I didn't consider. I always assumed that if it's out there, it's fair game. I can understand how some webmasters who have a tight budget, etc. would not want this. If I ever post an image again, I will use one of the services mentioned by other posters on this threat (Imageshack, etc.) where I would have control over content.
