Ut oh.
This is not good news.
Turkey is throwing Bush's preemptive doctrine back in his face, and threatening to take action against the PKK in the north of Iraq:
"But Turkey has the right to take preemptive action to defend its own security interests, just as Israel and the United States do."
Just when things were beginning to look really bad in Iraq, they begin to look . . . even worse. Unless the US cracks down on the PKK--which, incidentally, has
changed its name and claims to be trying to become more democratic--Turkey is reserving the right to enter Iraq and start messing around in the north. I can only imagine what would happen if they did enter Iraq in a big way, but I wouldn't guarantee that Iran would stay out in that case.
This also illustrates one of the problems with any solution in Iraq that doesn't provide for an adequate number of troops (US or UN) to keep things relatively peaceful. Unless the US keeps troops strength up, conditions threaten to decline into a civil war, which could very easily lead to a regional war involving Turkey, Iran, and possibly Syria.
Ugh.
