Civilian casualties

Sat Apr 10, 2004 at 10:33:16 PM PDT

10,000 civilians dead in Mr. Bush's War. Tens of thousands of refugees from Fallujah alone last week (they haven't merited any media attention).

To bring this into perspective, compare populations ratios. 25 million Iraqis, 300 million Americans. Think how many families and social networks would be affected by 120,000 Americans dying violently in a cataclysm not in their control.

I don't want to diminish the pain of 911 families in any way. Think if your country suffered 40 such events in a year.

This (graphic!) picture
should be on the nightly news. See www.robert-fisk.com for more if you don't want to sleep tonight.

  •  You just don't understand (none / 1)

That little girl with her feet blown away, she hated freedom.  See, the Iraqis hate freedom, that's why we must destroy them.

BTW, I swear if I hear Bush say we are in Iraq to fight "thugs and assasins who hate freedom and love terror" one more fucking time, I'm....I'm going to be really fucking pissed off!!!

  •  Can anyone say "Mass Graves"? (none / 0)

  •  Your country? (none / 0)

Are you not American--I am just curious really, nothing angry or critical. Your point is right on mark, but sadly our media is interested in other things. It only makes me think back to the earthquake in Bam; the Times did not even give it a full headline. 30,000 people died. PEOPLE. Human beings. Men, women, children. All innocent. What kind of nation has priorities like that?

Interesting that you picked up on that. I am not American by birth but I live in the US and my wife and kids are Murricans. I am thinking of getting naturalized (joined the ACLU, EFF etc so I have something to put into the List All Organizations You Have Ever Belonged To field in the form...)

The reason why I'm thinking of drinking Uncle Sam's koolaid in these times when some Americans are scouting property Canada or NZ, is largely the people here and elsewhere working for those original American ideals.

  •  Well it gets little coverage (none / 0)

(not that hte media does not sin every day) becasue of the lock down on the media our military has imposed.
I read we have moved in reinforcements, another battalion.  I am guessing some media will try ot get into the vicinity when the cease fire is over.
Even the long AP round up piece has a sense of dread.
  •  i hear ya (none / 0)

sometimes it's hard for me to understand why we can talk about anything except the actual people who are dying over there. the media has a way of making foreigners distant from the real world. i can't think of a better way to put it, but it's like we are supposed to pretend its not happening...

it's 3:06am on the east coast. i can't sleep tonight, and this is part of the reason.
