Colorado's legislature (controlled by Democrats) passed a bill that would have required emergency rooms to notify rape victims of the existence of emergency contraception -- a high dose of birth control pills which, when taken within hours of sex, prevents pregnacy. Catholic hospitals had objected to having to give the notice. In a pro-abortion move, Republican Governor Owens
vetoed the bill. He deciding that keeping rape victims uninformed and causing them to get pregnant and have more abortions as a result (
about 50% of rape victims choose abortion) was a price worth paying to permit Catholic hospitals to offer substandard care to rape victims in accordance with their religious beliefs.
The Bill passed by a veto proof majority in the State House, but did not pass by a veto proof majority in the State Senate, so the Governor's veto is likely to stand.
