Kos "Mercenary Comment": A Cynical Ruse to Drive up Traffic

Tue Apr 06, 2004 at 10:44:02 AM PDT

Like many other visitors to dKos, I've become a bit of an addict... checking in several times a day. I followed with some amazement what I felt to be the totally overblown reaction to Kos's now infamous "mercenary comment". In my opinion Kos was particularly gracious to those advertisers that decided to leave the site. My reaction, at least at a gut level was..Good Riddance... we've got enough of these Democratic wimps in Washington already!

So it has been particularly gratifying for me to watch the jump in daily visits to dKos since Marcos made his comment last Thursday. dKos received over 125,000 hits on Monday. Of course this may be just a temporary upsurge as a result of the increased publicity or there may be other factors involved like the increased violence in Iraq. But it sure doesn't seem that dKos has been damaged, as some had worried, as a result of the "mercenary flap"...

As I noted earlier today here the right is trying to use this to both damage candidates that associate with Kos and to dry up the revenue Kos uses to run this site.

I missed your diary.. they're scrolling by so fast today. I continue to be amazed at the issue that was made of Kos' comment... just another lesson at how hard we need to work now... and in the future to keep these people from completely taking over our country...

In a backhanded way, this whole contretemps testifies to the level that Kos has reached in the media food chain. He is now in the interesting if somewhat nerve-wracking position of being able to make a genuine gaffe, i.e., commit truth in some politically awkward way.

How appropriate that this should happen at the start of the baseball season! So long to the easy old days when no one but actual fans followed Kos's stats - now every pitch gets replayed on ESPN.
