No Free Ride For The Speaker

Tue May 25, 2004 at 09:26:19 PM PDT

I hadn't seen this posted.

Speaker Denny Hastert is not getting a free ride. When there was no Democrat on the primary ballot I assumed the seat was going un-contested.

Imagine my suprise when I went to the Kane County Democrats meeting tonight to catch a phone-in from Barack Obama and there was a candidate.

I was very happy to hear and meet Ruben K. Zamora the Democratic Candidate for the 14th district of Illinois.

It is a longshot district but because of the national office this is a race that must be contested.

Mr. Zamora spoke for a few minutes. He is an educator so was comfortable on the stump and did a nice job pointing out four big zeros in the Republican rule of the last four years; healthcare, education, jobs and Iraq.

As a candidate he contrasts well against Denny Hastert. Young and good-looking he is the candidate of America's future.

As a practical benefit he will bring out Hispanic voters in Aurora and Elgin. This will help up and down the ticket. Plus every PAC pork dollar Hastert is forced to spend at home is one he doesn't have for another district.

    add Zamora to the list.

    Barack Obama, Bean, Cegelis, Zamora....

almost makes me want to campaign all over Suburban Cook County.

We do need to support these folks.

I would like to call attention to Keith's sig line about Linda Jacobson, who is running against Republican Kenny Hulshoff in the 9th congressional district of Missouri. This is a swing state and Hulshoff is a big Bush booster. Support for Linda is a strike against George Bush.

And to extend the list to include the Senate races, I'd like to add Nancy Farmer's race against Kit Bond for one of the Senate seats. The same arguments apply as for Jacobsen/Hulshoff - maybe more so.

Illinois is a state that allows candidates to be added by the parties after the primaries.

There used to be a tradition that the political parties wouldn't run candidates against the leadership of the other party.  But, with Bill Frist campaigning against Tom Daschle in South Dakota that has obviously gone completely out the window.

Denny Hastert has shown himself to be pond scum with his vile and illogical attack on John McCain. He deserves to face serious scrutiny and it's good he'll now be forced to defend what he's said.
