Fahrenheit 911 theater listing

Sat Jun 12, 2004 at 02:23:17 PM PDT

The list of theaters that will be showing Fahrenheit 911 is now available at http://www.f911tix.com/.  It's scheduled to open on June 25, though that might change (see below).

So now that you know where it will be playing, you have a couple of weeks to get your group, Kerry literature, and voter registration forms together!

In related news, an article in today's LA Times that it will be rated R, but Moore is challenging the rating.  Leave it to Jack Valenti and our friends at the MPAA to try to limit viewership.  The story also said that execs at Lions Gate are trying to change the opening date to June 23.

  •  What? This stinks! (none / 0)

Oregon's only showing it in Portland? What about Eugene or Roseburg?  What about Corvallis?

There's about a dozen states that don't have it showing ANYWHERE.

    •  Hmm (none / 0)

I've got to think that if it makes a ton of cash, it will get wider distribution.
    •  Eugene and Ashland will get it within a week (none / 0)

      of opening, I bet...

      •  Actually, Ashland does have it. (none / 0)

So does Hillsboro, a suburb quite near to Portland. And several Portland theaters. I exaggerated.  But I wanted to see it on opening weekend and am not able to make a 2+ hour trip north or south at that time.  I know there are many near Eugene and Corvallis who feel the same way, and the theater owners here ought to know it, too.

Maybe I'll contact some local theaters and ask for it.

I played with the map just a little. Among the states that don't have it at all are Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, South Dakota, Kansas, West Virginia, Mississippi and Georgia (Georgia! What, not even Atlanta or Athens?). Maybe a couple others. Virginia has it only in fairfax; New Hampshire only in Hanover; Alabama in Montgomery. Louisville has it in several theaters; so does Indiana and South Carolina, so we are reaching some of the states that need to hear the message the most.  But it needs to be brought to towns near military bases.

        •  In Salem (none / 0)

I have been pestering our local arthouse theatre since the opening date was announced. The owner is on the phone daily to Lions Gate. So far she has found out that Salem would be not be on the initial list of 1000 theatres, but it is scheduled to be added in later (she probably won't get it though, since it is going "commercial"), so I am sure that Corvallis and Eugene will get it soon too. I am considering making the trek to Portland (only 1 hour from here) on the 25th, since it's my birhday, and it would be fun to get some friends to go with and have a celebration.
  •  Narrow Release (none / 0)

1 NYC theater, 2 LA theaters, 1 Chicago theater, 0 Boston theaters, 1 Philadelphia theater, 1 Dallas theater, 1 San Francisco theater.  Are they expecting more theaters soon?

    •  Search by state (none / 0)

Click on the map of your state and you'll see more.  There are only 3 listed as Los Angeles but there are quite a few in Southern California.
    •  Mass (none / 0)

It looks like Massachusetts is pretty well covered, actually. They're showing in fairly accessible theaters all over the state, including Brookline, which is for all intensive purposes, a part of Boston.

    •  Correction: 1 Boston Theater (none / 0)

The Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline can be counted as a Boston theater, since Brookline is directly adjacent to Boston and is for all intents and purposes part of the metro Boston area, much like Cambridge is.

It is rather disappointing to see a host of states where the film will not be shown, although I have a feeling the the film is destined to open wider after its first week.

    •  actually it's on a lot more in NYC (none / 0)

Brooklyn & Kew Gardens are also in NYC.

AND... what people are not noticing (and is clearly a fault of the web design) is if you click on "Fandango" you get lists of Loews theatres (including 3 more in NYC) than what appear when you click on the map.  THe other two direct links to movie ticket sites (Movietickets.com and Moviefone) don't list any theatres yet.  I presume there will be a lot more.

So what the map appears to show is only the independent theatre listings, not the big chains.  don't fret peeps, it's just a shitty job done by the webmasters.  this is going to have a wide opening.

  •  We need more theaters (none / 0)

    Especially in swing states.
    West Virgina has 0?
    Ohio has 6?
    Florida has 8?

    That's just sad.

    •  Calm down (none / 0)

It's a documentary! Even if it is Michael Moore, all documentaries are going to get limited releases. You think some theater in West Virginia is going to jump at the chance to kick Shrek and Spiderman out so a politically controversial documentary can take its place? If it proves it can rake in the dough, every theater in the country will want it.
    •  Rolling release (none / 0)

This is standard for Moore's films and art house fare...a week or two in major media markets, subsequent media coverage, then broader release if it is popular. Think "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" but substitute flaming buildings for flaming cheese.

It should get fairly wide release by mid-late July.

      •  Key (none / 0)

Your point is right on.  It's easy for me to say be patient, since the movie is showing in Eureka, California and I'm giving my whole office off (all of four people) to go see it together.  But for November purposes we want word of mouth to build audience to a crescendo and have it peak sometime around September.  So condolences go out to comrades in Topeka and Morgantown, but we'll do our part on the word-of-mouth-thing to make sure the theaters in your town are crying out for it.  Here's hoping the Repugs throw a hissy fit in the media and give it even more (free) publicity.

  •  You have to expect this (none / 0)

the movie will mostly be playing in independent type theaters.

I'm not suprised by the poor listings, they rushed it into theaters, and its a documentary.

I doubt it will get many serious theaters, which means it will take a LOT of buzz, or a rental storm to really get the film out to the public.  Most likely, the video stores will only have 2 or 3 copies like they did with Bowling for Columbine, so thats not too likely either.

In the end, most of the people who see this film will already have a bad opinion of Bush.

I love Moore's films, but its very unlikely the mass public will ever see one of his films.

    •  Raving? (none / 0)

The movie will be shown in 2 theaters in Little Rock, the Market Place Cinema (independent) and the Rave (an 18 screen mega theater).  I was initially surprised that the Rave (theater chain) is carrying the movie due to the "potential" political implications for the movie, but then again they go for money maker movies.  Could this be foreshadowing for a jump in screens showing the movie like Shrek 2?  Would the media switch from shilling for Bush to making a profit off the truth leaking out on the depravity of the Bush administration?

Then I have to wonder why does the Rave hate America?

(Someday I will get tired of the joke, but it is the only release I have from the oppressive environment created by the neocons in charge.  Laughter is the best medicine - thanks Jon Stewart, Al Franken, ...)

    •  Doesn't matter (none / 0)

All F911 has to do to achieve success is inject its ideas into the mainstream discourse.  What's important is not so much the number of people who see it, but WHO sees it; if lots of media types see it and it influences their perception of Bush, Moore has hit a grand slam.

Look at Rush Limbaugh--he "only" preaches to the party faithful, yet his destitute ideas exert a heavy influence on mainstream opinions.

    •  Free publicity (none / 0)

Jack Valenti is giving Moore free advertising by trying to restrict viewership.  Just like the earlier fight with Disney, the more attention they raise that powerful people do not want you to see this movie, the more it becomes a MUST SEE.  Think of Mel's Passion.  I wonder if Moore will hire protesters.
  •  wow (none / 0)

wow it's going to be showing here in bush loving, redneck Omlahoma.  I'm so excited I'm going to spit up!!!
  •  all in all (none / 0)

I think 1,000 theatres to start with is fantastic. If there is enough buzz about the film, it will spread to other areas and I think a lot of people will see it who are not as politically active as we are. I know that Moore is hoping a lot of young people will see it and be moved to register and vote. It does not have to convince people so much as motivate people.

This will not only run in art house theatres. In fact, in Portland almost all the theatres it's opening in are Regal. They would rather start with the big theatres if they think they can get the audience for it. I know our little art house theatre lucked out on a few sleeper films, such as Greek Wedding and Crouching Tiger and ran them for months, thereby subsidizing all the other films they run, sometimes to half-empty houses. Once they had the contract, the other theatres could not get the film until they gave it up. I don't think this will happen with F911 because it is anything but a "sleeper."

  •  Fun with google (none / 0)

I was curious to find out how much BFC raked in. I googled "Bowling for Columbine grossed" and the consensus is $21 million domestic, $58 million total w/international, a record for a documentary. So then I was like, what other films grossed about $20 million in America? So I googled "grossed $20 million" and I got the independent feature, "Whale Rider", Denzel Washington's "Antwone Fischer", "Amelie", and "Booty Call".

I have a feeling Michael will break his own record (hopefully double it, if not triple it.) and set a new standard for blockbuster documentaries. Any one want to lay bets on how much Fahrenheit 911 (aka Celsius 488.3 in Canada) will gross, total?

I say he'll do at least $50 million.

  •  Swing States Targeted ? (none / 0)

Here in AZ it is scheduled to open at 9 different large multiplexes covering Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa and all their nearby 'burbs. (Sorry, Flag & Prescott, you'll have to wait.)
  •  Fayetteville, which borders Fort Bragg. (none / 0)

    But not in Winston-Salem.
    •  Winston Salem (none / 0)

Not a surprise, because there was a theater implosion there a few years ago and all the cool theaters that showed indie fare (farewell North Point sniff) were scrapped. Not to mention it's Richard Burr's home district and they're apparently opening up a Ronald Reagan HS there soon. Ick.

But... two in Raleigh! With one in Durham and one in CH that makes 4 screens showing it within a half hour drive. And not only the indie houses; the corporate megaplexes are getting in on the action too!

  •  go to fandango.com (none / 0)

you'll see more listings, especially here in NYC.
  •  Cinemark! (none / 0)

I just looked at the listing for Ohio, and it's interesting that half of the six listed are Cinemark theaters.  (Plus an independent, a Loews, and a Rave.  Never heard of Rave.)  Yay for Cinemark!
(And one of those is here in Stark County, just a few miles from my house!)

I also notice that there's nothing in the Columbus area.  The Cinemark theaters there are all second-run, and I don't think there are any Loews remaining there, but there's a major local indie/artsy chain (Drexel) that I would've expected to pick it up.

  •  more theaters to come (none / 0)

I think this list will be expanded upon greatly as the date approaches. It's amazing they've signed so many in the just a few weeks.
  •  Only three theaters in all of New York City! (none / 0)

And only one in Manhattan!? People are going to be scalping tickets.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm going to order mine ASAP.

    •  come to Brooklyn (none / 0)

BAM has got a nice cinema near Atlantic/Pacific stations (lots of trains), and it should be less crowded than 86th st.
    •  I'm very surprised (and disappointed) (none / 0)

I figured it'd definitely be showing in my neighborhood at Lincoln Plaza Cinemas (which is where I saw BFC). I also figured it'd be showing at the Angelika.
    •  click fandango (none / 0)

check Fandango - you'll find 3 more in manhattan.

and brooklyn & queens aren't such horrible places.  I think you'd be VERY pleasantly suprised to see a show at BAM. It's much more spacious, modern & clean than any manhattan art house. And no trains rumbling underneath your seat distracting from the movie-going experience.

don't be afraid -- subways are your friend.

And I love BAM -- I was a subscriber years before there were even decent restaurants within walking distance! (Now it's like paradise in comparison to those days.)

  •  This is not the entire list (none / 0)

I just received the list of upcoming movies for the independent movie theater in St. Johnsbury, Vermont and they are showing the film. I checked and the website only listed Montpelier and Burlington in Vermont.

  •  not a bad opening (none / 0)

Bowling for Columbine opened on only 8 screens and eventually played on 248, and it still managed to sell more than 2 million tickets.  This sounds like a wider open immediately, and if it's a big hit (I can guaratee that every showing opening weekend will sell out in New York), then it should get a wider release.

Not much in the way of good art fils in the summer usually, so it should do pretty well, although Spider Man II opens the foloowing weekend.
