"Go fuck yourself" -- Cheney

Thu Jun 24, 2004 at 04:49:11 PM PDT

WWJD? Probably not tell a fellow man to "go fuck yourself".
Typically a break from partisan warfare, this year's Senate class photo turned smiles into snarls as Vice President Dick Cheney reportedly used profanity toward one senior Democrat, sources said.

Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, who was on the receiving end of Cheney's ire, confirmed that the Vice President used profanity during Tuesday's class photo.

A spokesman for Cheney confirmed there was a "frank exchange of views."

Ha ha! I have directed many a "frank exchange of views" at Cheney.

Update: Now we know Leahy's big sin that set Cheney off -- he said "hello".

According to congressional aides, Leahy said hello to Cheney following the taking of the Senate group photo on the floor of the chamber.

Cheney, who is president of the Senate, then ripped into Leahy for the Democratic senator's criticism this week of alleged war profiteering in Iraq by Halliburton, the oil services company that Cheney once ran.

Cheney is obviously feeling the heat.

It's just a shame the Senate wasn't in session- as it was, Cheney didn't technically break the rules.

Still, though, dropping an F-bomb on someone in that setting, no matter how heated the discussion, shows the unravelling of the Bush and Dick show.

(I just can't get enough of that "pants on fire" bit--Kerry should release an attack ad based on it, maybe in a couple weeks or during the Repub convention?)

Or does that ad actually make us look good? I mean, it does look scary, but that is because the stuff that's going on in this country IS pretty scary. With all that is finally coming out in the news, the words of Gore, Dean and Kerry just make them sound like they knew the mess we were getting in.

        Or maybe it's wishful thinking...

        •  I'm with you. (none / 1)

I watched this ad and wondered why the Bush team is sending out video of people articulating criticisms that are valid and apropos. The speakers didn't look very wild-eyed to me - Moore looked positively prescient.

And that lame wrap-up photo of George and Laura with the dismal music and the "Just keep smiling" tagline ... it seemed as if it's just too ripe for satire.

This ad may actually lose Bush votes. Is it true that Dubya is personally authoring these things? He's more out of touch than we've been giving him credit for.

It's only June and they see it slipping away and they don't know what the hell to do. This is why Cheney lost it on the Senate floor and dropped the F-bomb on Leahy. They're toast, and they know it. Scooter Libby is about to get indicted in Plamegate, they're so bogged down in Iraq that they're begging North Korea for a deal, and the 9-11 Commission is about to hand them their heads.

        •  Isn't that the MoveOn ad? (none / 0)

I remember hearing that one of the ads submitted to the Bush in 30 seconds contest compared Bush to Hitler. I think the Republican ad is saying: Look how outrageous and offensive the Democrats are, they scream and scream and THEY EVEN COMPARED BUSH TO HITLER!!

At least, that's how I read Bush's ad. I thought they were putting excerpts from that ad submitted to MoveOn. If that's not what's happening, I can't make head or tails of why they included that footage. Anyone here knows if that's the Moveon ad?

Either way, I think the images end up not giving a clear image and could actually work against Bush. The Dems should come out strong against this, something on the lines of: The Repubs used Osama against Cleland, and now they want to use Hitler against Kerry? How dare they!!!

Nobody wants Hitler in political ads, things are bad enough as it is. I think this move will backfire, I doubt they'll be able to keep it in the air for long.

      •  Good lord, that's pathetic (4.00 / 5)

        Message:

Ha ha, we found some footage of Democrats looking ugly and saying mean things.

        Hitler said mean things too.

        John Kerry is a Democrat.

Therefore, John Kerry is Hitler.  And ugly.

Remember, if Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must re-elect George Bush.

I mean seriously, do they really want to start this?  If they want to put up random Democratic politicans and Moore, then it's certainly fair game for us to find the most obnoxious things ever said be GOP politicans, and their supporters.

How about Falwell saying we deserved 9/11 because of gays and abortion?

Tom Delay blaming Columbine on the teaching of evolution in schools?

Rush Limbaugh saying anything.  Some juicy quotes from NRA chief Wayne LaPierre.  Ken Starr.  Richard Nixon.  Tim McVeigh, for that matter.

And I bet you could even find some footage of Josef Stalin  that would somehow fit in visually with some of the clips of Republicans.  The photos of Rummy and Saddam together.  Or how about the Chambliss ads where Cleland morphed into Osama.

Yes, this ad is hard hitting in one sense, but it's also remarkably empty. At least the Willy Horton connected to something in Dukakis' record.  My opponents are pessimists and have ugly faces, vote for me instead is a pretty desperate sign.

That's especially true with the current right track / wrong track numbers and Bush's sinking numbers on credibility.  In this situation, when they see real problems getting worse and are beginning to question the admin's competence, empty optimism isn't going to be enough.  Reagan's "morning in America" worked partly because things were better, and getting better still, in 1984.  In 2004, they're a lot worse than Bush said they'd be by now.

      •  Uh (none / 0)

      •  WTF? (none / 0)

This can't possibly be intended  to run on TV.

Why would the GOP spend money to repeat the words "abu ghraib" yet  again?  Why spend  money to spread some of the Dems best  attack lines.   I mean, they're trying to paint  Kerry as "Massachusset's Liberal,"  but they've got him saying "we're gonna kick ass."

This clip makes no  sense, at all.   Some ideas

        1. It's  not meant  for wide distribution, but was meant for  some small, carefully targetted slice of their base.
        2. it's some weird sort of bait.
        3.  The higher-ups in the campaign scotched this stupid  ad,  but are leaving  it up  on the  web page to assuage some bruised  egos
        4.  The folks at Bush/Cheney are panicking.
        any more ideas?
        •  the new W ad... (none / 0)

Is this a serious ad?  would someone put any part of it on TV?  I think not.  I can't imagine that would sway any swing voter.  W just wants people to think that disagreeing with him is un-American.  What's with interlacing all the pictures of Hitler?  If anything the Hitler/Bush is made stronger (though I don't think it is a good analogy... or any image you want in a campaign).. although there are times where W looks like he is saluting in the right hand 45 degree up Hitlerish way.

It must be bait or to rally the hard righters...

Really, I was confused.  For a minute, I thought www.georgebush.com was one of those parody sites that's really against the president.  How in the world does this ad help Bush?  All this ad does is give the Dems an opening to say that Bush compared them to Hitler (which he doesn't, but most people who don't know the whole MoveOn controversy could easily believe it does).

I admit that I am biased, and the images in that video (the ones that do not show Hitler, that is) make me cheer, but that said, I don't see how that spot helps Bush at all.  What was the point?  Were they comparing the Democrats to Hitler?  Were they saying the Democrats compare Bush to Hitler?  I know those Hitler snippets were taken from the two MoveOn entries that were disqualified, but still caused Gillespie and Co tho clutch their pearls and cry outrage, but I doubt anyone who wasn't familiar with the contrived controversy would know what the hell the Hitler pictures were supposed to mean.

If anything that ad makes Bush look bad.  I assume, however, that it isn't going to air on the TV because there is no "I approved this message" tag at the end, but if this is the direction in which they are going to take their campiagn, they are really screwed.

There's a big difference between saying "fuck" and saying "fuck you." One's just an obscene word, and the other is a nuclear-level insult. However, the blue-noses who get upset at just the obscenity aren't likely to excuse the insult.

    •  Seriously (none / 1)

I think his behavior has been getting a little, shall we say, bizarre. I mean, the lying has just become grossly obvious -- he must have no idea about what is common knowledge among the chattering classes to say the things he's been saying. Or else he is just raising the stakes to a truly Orwellian level: believe Big Brother or drown in shit!

Either way, it's megalomania on parade.

  •  I bet Andy is even more disappointed this time. (4.00 / 2)

When asked in the interview about the success of rival candidate Howard Dean (search), whose anti-war message has resounded with supporters, Kerry responded: "When I voted for the war, I voted for what I thought was best for the country. Did I expect Howard Dean to go off to the left and say, 'I'm against everything?' Sure. Did I expect George Bush to f--- it up as badly as he did? I don't think anybody did."

The expletive drew a rebuke from White House, which suggested an apology might be in order.

"That's beneath John Kerry," the president's chief of staff, Andrew Card, said in a televised interview.

"I'm very disappointed that he would use that kind of language," Card said. "I'm hoping that he's apologizing at least to himself, because that's not the John Kerry that I know."

    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,105097,00.html

For the record, I'm not disappointed.

  •  The Administration's Position in a Nutshell (none / 0)

Screwing the underdog, cutting the Dems out of the picture, smearing the competition, the ends justify the means, torture, lying, stealing, cheating, Enron, prescription drug, no child left behind...

Um, OK, so now he spells out the administration's feeling a bit more clearly. Hasn't this been the message all along?  "Fuck you!"

  •  Censure? (none / 0)

    Senate not officially in session....

    Still.....

  •  why isn't the media overwrought about... (none / 1)

    ...out-of-control Dick Cheney?

Why isn't the media obsessing about Dick Cheney's inability to control his temper?

MAYBE ITS BECAUSE PATRICK LEAHY IS GIVING HIM A PASS!

Can you imagine Orrin Hatch giving Al Gore a pass if Gore had told Hatch "Go Fuck Yourself?"

    •  Seriously. (none / 0)

This is definitely an occasion that calls for a little insincere grandstanding for media effect.  I'm not kidding.  They'd do it to us in a heartbeat.  Rattle his cage all the way back to the navel observatory.  It's stupid, but it's fun.  You don't have to make any legitimate point - just make sure that everyone in the country knows he used the F-word.  They'll lose a few grandmas, and we'll move on to the next thing.

Democrats have to learn to go for the jugular.

      •  Demand an apology (none / 1)

That's all Leahy needs to do. Then Cheney can:

        -apologize and admit he told Leahy to fuck himself;
        -deny it and make sure all the senators around at the time know he's a blatant liar TO THEM;
-ignore the request and further piss off the Senate.

As far as I understand it, the Senate takes this collegiality crap far more seriously than they should. I can't see them being too pleased.

    •  Leahy for VP (none / 0)

That would get the media talking about this episode for months, regardless of whether Leahy chooses to "grandstand" (which would be beneath him).

    From Counterpunch:

In 1986, a clearly drunk and  disorderly Bush told The Wall Street Journal's Al Hunt, "You  fucking son of a bitch . . . I saw what you wrote. We're not  going to forget this."

    and

Time magazine is reporting  that during a March 2002 briefing for three senators by Condoleezza Rice, Bush poked his head into a White House meeting room and  bellowed, "Fuck Saddam. We're taking him out!"
    •  And then there's the time Governor Bush (none / 1)

went up to his Democratic lieutenant governor, kissed him on the mouth and said, "If you're going to fuck me, I want you to kiss me first," which is not without its own peculiar charm.

  •  Is there an audio recording? (4.00 / 3)

I think this needs to be played on all of the news shows 24/7 like the Dean scream, then we need to analyze it on all of the Sunday morning talk shows, talk shows, and forums like the Gore NYU speech.  I hope Instapundit and Sully comment on the man's tone, not the message or context of episode, but on the tone.  It  should be the front page of all of the major papers and psychologists who've never met Cheney should start to analyze his mental stability.  Why the NYT opinion columnists should get 2-3 columns a piece on the topic.  Then, Drudge should link it to his front page... oh that's done.

Then again, maybe Dick is just setting the stage for an ad by big pharma for a new anger management pill.

  •  Keeping score (none / 1)

There are so many ways this administration has frank-exchange-of-viewsed itself. I wish I had the time to setup a scoreboard site (hint, hint).

    Just some of the issues:
       Use of torture.
       Authorization of torture.
Rewarding Bybee for writing protorture opinions with a federal judgeship.
       Haliburton bribery during Cheney's CEOship.
       Haliburton's gets nobid contracts.
       Haliburton overcharges.
       CAP mismanagement:
         18+ Bil allocated; only 3.6 B used - 3.0 B for contractor security, only .6 B for reconstruction
Use of CAP for politcal patronage.
eg 24 year-old with NO experience setting up Iraq Stock Exchange
       Instability and casualties
       No WMD's
Delusional occupation plan and subsequent debacle

  •  Cheney, almost exactly four years ago (4.00 / 7)

CNN Crossfire, July 25, 2000, on the selection of Cheney as Bush's VP nominee:
MATALIN: All right, my favorite senator from the wrong side, let's talk about this selection, as deep and about as wonderful as the selection -- the selectees were.

Let's hear from Dick Cheney, listen to what he had to say today at the announcement.

    (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DICK CHENEY (R), VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I look forward to working with you, Governor, to change the tone in Washington, to restore a spirit of civility and respect and cooperation. It's time for America's leaders to stop pointing the finger of blame and to begin sharing the credit for success.

    (END VIDEO CLIP)

MATALIN: Obviously, we are focusing on the selection of Dick Cheney, but isn't this more about the presidential nominee, George W. Bush? He promised -- one of his campaign promises is to change the tone in Washington and doesn't Dick Cheney, as we just saw him and as we know of his record, epitomize civility and bipartisan cooperation?

  •  What if this happened at your job? (4.00 / 2)

If I told a co-worker at my job "go fuck yourself" in a public setting, what would happen to me?

Possibly nothing.  But if the other person wanted to press it to HR, odds are I would be, at the very least, reprimanded, and quite possibly fired.

    And I'd deserve it.

    •  It happened at my job (none / 1)

Kind of. This was just before I started working there so I don't have the full details, but my friend had messed something up, and she got an e-mail from her supervisor calling her "fucking stupid" or "a fucking moron." It's not even like she regularly gets things wrong, not that that would justify it, anyway.

She immediately saved the e-mail and made several printouts and copies of it, and went straight to our group manager. Her supervisor was reprimanded and there was some kind of rearrangment in their working relationship. It was taken very seriously.

It's not about the fact that he dropped the F-bomb.  I could give a rat's ass that Bush said "Fuck Saddam" or Kerry said "I didn't know he'd fuck it up.."  It's more the totally out of line and obnoxious and uncivil direct insult, and the fact that it was delivered on the Senate floor, to the face of a Senator by the Vice President of the United States.  That's completely inappropriate.  I might tell some jerk who's annoying me at a bar to go fuck himself, but I don't say that to my colleagues at work.  Even fucking Richard Nixon didn't swear like that in public, did he?

    •  Let's not forget (none / 0)

that Cheney says very little publicly that isn't scripted.

He's Bush's ROCK, the silver-tongued devil who (according to the 9/11 Commission) cooly authorized the military to shoot down a hijacked plane that had already crashed.

But for weeks now the woods have been burning.

So when Cheney sees Leahy on the Senate floor, he loses his cool completely and tries to take him on; Leahy shoves it right back in his snarling, angry face. Hey, thinks Cheney, I went to YALE, goddammit! NOBODY talks to me like that!

Then, just as he's about to unleash a torrent of choice invective on poor Leahy, his pacemaker starts making expensive noises; and, even with the 5% discount he gets for buying them by the case, he knows it's much too early in the season for a full frontal assault. His mind races: he can't call Leahy an asshole--that's Bush's word!

      FUCK YOU!

The die is cast. Les jeux sont faits! Cheney can never again claim the high ground.

The Cheney spokesman had it right, all he really said to Leahy was, "frank view"-- as in, "I'd like to share with you a frank view."  Leahy just caught the end of it and misunderstood.  No big deal.

I just sent the following letter to Senator Leahy:

    Dear Senator Leahy,

Let me get this straight now, our crime-boss vice-president says "F***  yourself"  to you on the senate floor, and you apologize for him, saying he was "having a bad day".

Jeez, no wonder people think the democrats are wimps.

This is a real problem. I spend a lot of time trying to convince Naderites to vote democrat this time. They all have the idea that democrats are basically the same as republicans, feeding at the same defense and lobbyist troughs, in the service of big business; the difference being republicans get very nasty, and democrats wimp out. So they vote for Nader in disgust.

You haven't made my work any easier.

Might I suggest you bone up on the sly cutting remark, the acid witticism, and the martial art of the riposte? You could have nailed that s.o.b. with one this week.

Instead you cover for him. And enable the smirking Cheney to go on TV to say- get this- that  he felt better afterward, and that "a lot of people thought it was long overdue".

Your masochism is really out of order. We want you to do something to protect our democracy, and do it with strength, not apologetically. Don't apologize for being a democrat, for being with the people. Or the people won't be with you.
