Byrant Trial to Start August 27th

Fri Jun 25, 2004 at 04:37:21 PM PDT

No, I don't really care about the trial, but I can't help but to wonder if it's a godsend to have the trial, which is likely to be a media spectacle gearing up during the RNC.

Can the Kobe trial overshadow RNC?

Anyways, here is a link to the story about the start date of the Kobe trial that I got from cnn.com:  http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/basketball/nba/06/25/bryant.trial/index.html?cnn=yes

  •  Godsend for Whom? (none / 0)

I wonder if we'll have more water cooler discussions about the Kobe trial than Chicago-in-'68-style police brutality many are expecting in New York?  For that matter, who knows which of the ongoing scandals might be picking up some legs around that time?

I doubt it will affect the convention at all.
Even given the fact that an exoneration is almost a done deal. The tabloids will be covering it non-stop. The hard news operations will give it 30 second-spots.

Whenever there is a war to be fought, those who are the most likely to fight it are the least likely to gain from it.

    •  What planet are you from (none / 0)

Big media will be all over it. But it will take more from the protests than the convention itself.

I suspect that you're correct.  I remember when Bush was visiting in England, his trip and the absolutely massive protests awaiting him didn't rate a blurb on the ad for that night's local evening news...they wanted us to be aware of their stories on Michael Jackson and a local animal hospital that does physical therapy for dogs.
      •  Ugh.. (none / 0)

Didn't think about taking away from the protest coverage... :(
      •  Nah (none / 0)

Look at Scott Peterson...yes the cable channels are on it, but even they're just sort of going through the motions ("Well this proves that""No it doesn't" blah blah blah) and everyone said this was going to be the biggest thing going.

Truth of the matter is, trials (even "sensational" ones) are usually very dreary
talky affairs with only the occasional soap-opera, Perry-Mason-type bombshell occurring. You can only devote so much time to these things.

But you are right about one thing--protests will NOT be extensively covered by the SCLM. They'll give them less time than Kobe.

Whenever there is a war to be fought, those who are the most likely to fight it are the least likely to gain from it.
