•  I think I know what he means

  There's a scene with soldiers when they first invade and one with the hooding of prisoners.

  But he misinterprets both.
  The first is easy to misinterpret, but it's meant to show the naivete of the soldiers and how they've been hyped up.
  It's a contrast to later when they see how wrong things have gone.

  The second is to show that the longer we stay, the more warped we get.
