We made the front page!

Mon Jul 19, 2004 at 06:32:06 AM PDT

Just tooting my (well, our) own horn:  Democrats Abroad Australia made the front page of today's Washington Post with a photo of our voter registration booth in downtown Sydney.

The full article is about worldwide efforts to register Americans living abroad to request absentee ballots, and most of the article's reporting actually took place in Mexico -- but apparently we were more photogenic Down Under, so the photo goes to us.  Woohoo!

  •  congratulations (none / 0)

They actually printed your own names as well as your organization's name.

When I (and another person) made the front page of the NY Times Metro section last spring while registering voters and campaigning for Dean at a local Mosque, all they said was "advocates for political candidates handed out flyers..."  When, in fact, we (the Dean guys) were the only ones there (so, at the very least, "candidates" should've been "candidate") and we had a long conversation with the journalist.  Unfortunately, we didn't quite fit  her predetermined, oh-so-convenient storyline.

    Sorry for the rant...

U.S. authorities, acting on the outstanding warrant, recently canceled Fischer's U.S. passport after discovering that he had a 90-day visa to visit Japan. Authorities there detained him at the airport for failing to possess valid travel documents, U.S. authorities said.

      OOPS, wrong picture:

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Guess who made the front page of today's Washington Post? Check out the photo!

I helped to set up that booth. (I'm not in the photo, because I had to scuttle off to work afterwards -- but, hey, I was there.) What are you doing to elect John Kerry?

  •  Okay, I realize it's winter Down Under (none / 0)

But does it get so cold that knit caps and heavy sweaters are needed? I always thought Sydney would remain kind of spring like in climate, even during its winter months.

I live in my own little world...but it's okay. They know me here.

You get a few chilly days, maybe into the 40s (F) but it never freezes or snows. In general you never need more than a light jacket.

That particular part of downtown Sydney (Martin Place) is shielded from the sun by tall buildings and has a slight wind-tunnel effect going on... so if you're sitting at a table there for several hours in the early morning (we started setting up at 7:30 a.m.), it's a good idea to dress warmly.

I've lived in Sydney for four years, and my Chicago winter coat only leaves the closet when I'm flying back to Chicago.
