      •  I checked out FreeRepublic... (4.00 / 10)

...and their main reaction is to hope that they convince him to become a Republican.  Given all that talk about "values" and God, they figure he'll eventually realize he is the wrong party.

That, and someone pointed out, "We better start digging up dirt on this guy NOW"

I think the best response, though, was this:

        >"Brother's Keepers?  Sounds Commie to me!"

Here's what one poster said about the Kids for Kerry girl:

When I was a tot, a child like that was considered so cute that they put her in a multiple Tony-winning Broadway show and made her into America's sweetheart.

In fact, I half expected her to lead John Edwards out by the hand and lead everybody in a rousing chorus of, "The Sun'll come out, Tomorrow..."

I seem to recall that was a show about Democrats recovering from a Republican economy, too. FDR as a major character, and everything.

    •  How good was Obama? (none / 0)

The Heathers are all still gushing.  It's unanimous.

He laid out the Democratic message -- strong, optimistic populism.  Democrats have the heart and the soul to help build a better America.

Remember a few years ago when we had no stars adn all the talk was on the GOP side?  Jesus has that changed or what?  Ignorning the man who will be the next president for a second, we've got:

      Edwards
      Obama
      Clinton
      Richardson
      Durbin
      Granholm
      Napolitano

just to name a few.  This line up is very similar to what the Democratic Senate was in the 50s.  Stars in the making.

stars.  Some brighter than others.  The ones I want to see are those up and commers who have recently become involved with politics and are the undiscovered ones.

It's up to us to find, brush up and support those gems in the making.  Before they are ground up and spit out by the local party. Then perhaps the mainstream Dems will warm to them when they make their appearance on the political stage.

Hopefully, in the space of a few short years (probably longer), progressives can hold up a minor host of Obama stars for the public to elect.

    •  Yes (none / 1)

because he's not just a pretty face and a speaker who can cast a spell:  he's the real deal, he's worked for years to organize and improve the lots of residents of some of the most impoverished and neglected neighborhoods on the south side of Chicago-- neighborhoods where I grew up, which were crippled by white flight in the 1960's and which have suffered ever since from economic and social blight.

Because he means every word he says and lives by those words, and he has the rare ability to inspire people to do better by setting an example.

Because he has made his peace with his past, his demons, and his baggage, and won't be rocked by the idiocy and ignorance that will buffet him on the national political scene.  He's a man who knows who he is, where he's going, and what he wants to do-- what needs to be done.  And he can convey that to other people.

His name is entirely accurate.  He is a blessing.

That choice speaks of his passion for service to the community, and his remarkable ethical integrity.

They actually outlawed Kentucky Blue Grass lawns in Albuquerque. If you already had a blue grass lawn, then you could keep it and continue it. But if not, no planting one in city limits.

Last year was so bad, there wasn't much argument about it.

New Mexicans seem better than Arizonians about their lawns, though; we have a lot of "rock" lawns here in NM (lava rock planted with native plants and cactus are as common as grass lawn yards, especially in the southern part of the state).

Pretty much the same story here in New Mexico. We've had a good ten years of below average rainfalls. This year's been better, but everyone here is holding their breath hoping that the monsoons continue normally (so far a good start).

Last year was devastating, our monsoon pretty much failed completely. It'll take years of normal rainfall to recover, though.

A good choice to follow Obama.  You couldn't put a "rally the faithful" speaker on, because they could never measure up.  Reagan is there to make arguments about science and morality, and he's doing it very well so far.

The Democrats are wisely becoming the party of free traders. The difference between us and the Republicans is that we want to make the transition smooth. If we can make the legislation that helps take away your job for the time being, we can give you something so you don't go broke while the other one is being created.

From Gep and Daschle to THIS?

3 brilliant and VERY diverse speeches back-to-back. They were as good as last night. Not better, but as good. And most importantly, they were very diverse.

    Bravo DNC!

Ron's speaking was so ordinary and yet his words were so extraordinary. The best fit I could imagine. He wasn't trying to shill a candidate, or an agenda. He was simple, direct, and heartbreaking. He made a connection and it's a shame that the general public will never know what a good and kind and strong man he is.

What were Brooks and the hacks saying about this?

    •  Brooks (none / 0)

agreed that stem cell research is a major issue with "social conservatives."  Brooks' tone was that Reagan had hit a home run.

Shields mentioned that there is some criticism about stem cell research that the proponants are promising too much, too soon.  Brooks agreed.  Jim Lehrer said that they would definitely do a focused piece on it with some other "experts."

      Whatever.

      •  brooks & shields (none / 0)

said that stem cell research is the sleeper issue this year.

ron reagan said, "vote for stem cell research"

i liked that he explained how cellular stem cells actually are.  i'm sure it cleared up the argument for many people.  he made it sound like any other cellular research.  he also put the faces of the suffering on the issue.

granted, i am the choir, but i think he may have made the case for the undecideds & those who have been mislead by the theocrats.

and he may have brought home some reagan dems & brought over some indies.

i was worried about him following obama, but he did a very good job.  sober & convincing.

Wow!  The 12-year old founder of Kids for Kerry, Ilana Wexler was AMAZING!  I hope everybody pulled their kids into the room and gave them the opportunity to see her speak.  What a great idea to give her a couple of minutes on the agenda.  She's one of the 3-4 speakers that I'll remember from this convention.  Her best line, after mentioning that Cheney used a "bad word", was that he "needs a long time out".  The crowd went WILD.
