Jodi, Why Don't You Count Bush's Word Usage

(and emailed to Daniel Okrent)

I knew Jodi Wilgoren was up to no good when she started her front page article with:

"Forty-eight minutes into a rambling speech about education, health care, jobs and equal opportunity here the other morning, Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts..."

(my emphasis)
She then lists a few examples of Kerry's use of the word "values" and then writes:

Last Saturday, Mr. Kerry used the V-word no fewer than eight times in a 36-minute speech to Hispanic leaders and next Wednesday he is scheduled to give a speech on his "plan to restore America's values to the White House."

(my emphasis)

I didn't have to read further to write this post (thank goodness).  I suddenly remembered this post by Max Sawicky where he points out Bush's incessant use of "confidence" and "entrepreneur" in his speech on Friday.  So I looked up Bush's remarks and did the word count.  Bush used the word confident or confidence 24 times and used some version of the word entrepreneur 14 times

So then I looked for the front page article about Bush's speech and his sudden shift in tone towards promoting confidence and entrepreneurial activity...but I couldn't find it!

I expected it to start something like this:

WASHINGTON D.C, July 2 -- In a monotonous speech about the decline in job growth several months after the end of a three year "jobless recovery", President Bush seemed to think that if he said the word "confidence" enough times people would become confident.   "I've just met with some small business owners. I'm going to introduce them here in a second. They're confident."  Bush said before a hand picked audience of businessmen, or as Bush would call them "entrepreneurs".  ... President Bush used the C-word no fewer than twenty four times and the E-word no fewer than 14 times in the 40-minute speech* to business leaders

In my dreams.  I still can't believe that Wilgoren has the audacity to write about politics after stunts like these.  I won't hold my breath for the "reader's representative" at the New York Times, Daniel Okrent to raise his voice about this outrageous unbalanced coverage.  After a bit of tut-tutting he always seems to have some excuses for the Times writers and editors.  For once, Mr. Okrent represent the readers and just the readers and resist the need to make excuses for the Times!

UPDATE:  I looked past page A1 and on page B1, Edmund Andrews writes about Bush's speech and his take on the economy but shockingly doesn't do the parallel word count!

Here's an excerpt for Andrews' article:

In an otherwise buoyant speech shortly after the government reported a surprisingly weak increase in employment in June, Mr. Bush struck a momentarily cautious note.

"We've got an economy which is changing,'' he told a group of small-business owners at the White House on Friday morning. "The nature of the job base is changing. And all of that means it's been a difficult period of time.''

Even as he declared that "we're getting stronger'' and that the economy had "momentum,'' Mr. Bush seemed to lower his goals ever so slightly.

"We don't need boom-or-bust-type growth,'' he said. "We just want steady, consistent growth so that our fellow citizens will be able to find a job.''

*my Real Audio Player wasn't working so I couldn't figure out how long the speech really was!

  •  Secret e-mail (4.00 / 3)

A bit off-topic, but earlier today I saw Neil Gabler on TV saying that there was a "secret e-mail" from a NYT reporter wherein "she" (unnamed) discussed "loathing" Kerry. I immediately thought of Jodi W, but haven't found anything on Google to confirm. Can anyone help me out with info on this? I'd not previously read anything on the subject.
    •  Gabler? (none / 0)

no suggestions...but who is Gabler? and which network?
      •  Fox News Watch--don't laugh (none / 1)

I got the spelling wrong--it's Neal Gabler, and he's one of the 4 regulars on Fox's News Watch with Eric Burns. Given Fox, it's not a bad show; Gabler and Jane Hall are "real" liberals, not straw men like Alan Colmes, and one of the conservatives--Jim Pinkerton--is a paleocon with who opposes W's war and fiscal decadence. Cal Thomas is the only stupid Bushbot, not a bad average for Fox.
    •  I caught that exchange as well (4.00 / 3)

and was fascinated.  I had not heard of this e-mail before.  In fact the whole run down of their conversation on NYT reporter specific coverage over both 04 and 00 election season was amazing.  They get it.
But then a week or so ago I caught them having a conversation on the FCC and the fines etc., they "got" that as well (the goal is to "control" the news).  It's an interesting group.

Gabler also used "she" so there is no doubt in my mind.  But I want to see the email.

      •  They named Judith Miller the worst .... (none / 0)

        ...reporter for 2003.

        (COMMERCIAL BREAK)

BURNS:  For Worst Performance By A Journalist in 2003, Neal Gabler nominates without question...

GABLER:  Judith Miller of The New York Times.  Judith Miller (search) has done so many egregious things this year that it's hard to innumerate them all in the time we have.  One, she pressured the Army into keeping a unit with which she was embedded that was looking for weapons of destruction -- she reported on April 21 that they found the weapons of mass destruction.  She reported that there was a link between Al Qaeda (search) and Iraq. She reported they found mobile labs. She reported they found chemical weapons. I mean the list goes on and on and on. This woman, not Jayson Blair (search), this woman should have been immediately fired. And there should have been a whole issue of The New York Times dedicated to correcting her misstatements.

        (LAUGHTER)

        BURNS:  Hard to disagree with?

PINKERTON:  Hold the presses here, as it were.  I agree with Neal.

(LAUGHTER)[Ed note:  they were laughing really hard]

PINKERTON:  I -- she -- they -- she owes a major apology and so does the Times.

HALL:  Well, and so far it has not been forthcoming.  So I tend to agree with these guys.  I would cite a smaller but significant thing, which is [syndicated columnist] Robert Novak (search), who was ready, willing, and able to do the dirty work of the Bush Administration in outing the CIA agent who happened to be married to a man who wrote a report that embarrassed the Bush Administration about weapons of mass destruction.

THOMAS:  I nominate Peter Jennings (search) and much of the ABC News bureau for constantly searching for and finding a black lining in every silver cloud.

It's a good show.  But, I once played 11 football games in high school with bad cuts on my knee from a motorcycle accident (they won't heal in those conditions), yet I don't have the stomach to watch Foxx.  So its hard to catch that show, when I avoid the channel like the plaque.  I even took it off my tivo list, so I wouldn't surf across it accidentally.

DHowler may know who Neal is talking about.  And he's a good guy, he returns my relevant e-mails.

      •  Interesting group to be sure (none / 0)

Which raises the question as to what in the world they are doing on Fox.  I have just this morning decided to un-Tivo all my political shows, and remove my news channels from my PDA.  (See my diary for the reason why.)  I'm "unplugging" cold turkey from the news.  But the one show I couldn't bear to cut off was Fox News Watch.

  •  Inadequate (4.00 / 2)

Ms. Wilgoren is not qualified to be writing about the campaign for the New York Times.  She specializes in gossip, not news, and is a disgrace to this already thoroughly-disgraced newspaper.  Sorry to sound shrill, but there it is.

  •  Jodi Wilgorin (none / 0)

Interesting. Jodi Wilgorin wasn't a known name to me, and when I read the story this morning I actually saw it as positive and mentioned it on some other long-gone thread.

I read the NY Times online (the articles they send me by e-mail), and I guess I read this article too fast.

I've now reread it, and I see what you mean, but I still think a lot of readers would come away with a favorable impression of what Kerry was saying.

I'll have to keep my eyes open for Wilgorin from now on. Thanks.

    You said:

"Bush used the word confident or confidence 24 times and used some version of the word entrepreneur 14 times."

He didn't attempt "entrepreneurial," did he??  My God, innocent bystanders might have been hurt!!
