weekend canvass update

Mon Sep 20, 2004 at 09:24:37 AM PDT

Quick report on a swing-state weekend canvass in Las Vegas, NV. We had 10 volunteers (including one who had come from England to spend her vacation volunteering for Kerry!) and hit over 300 homes, identifying about 150 supporters from among "marginal democratic" voters. We also registered at least 6 new voters.

Lots of senior citizens in these precincts and we took names and addresses for vote-by-mail (in effect, no-fault absentee ballot).

Biggest drawbacks were that the Party gave us NO Spanish-language material (in Southern Nevada?!!) -- fortunately we were able to make our own flyers -- and a very aleatory list in low-income appartment blocks.

  •  Canvassing in PA (none / 0)

My wife and I were up in PA, Philadelphia suburbs, on Saturday. There were busloads of people there from NYC, it was all organised by the league of conservation voters.

I'm not sure how many total doors were knocked on, but they were hoping for 5-6,000.

What I found most interesting was that many of the people seemed to have no idea what an 'issue' was. Or really have much of an opinion one way or the other. A very, very different - and eye-opening - situation to where I live: Capitol Hill, DC.

We're going back as many weekends as we can from now until the election.
