I'm sure many Kossacks got an email today from MoveOn.org asking them to write letters to the editor about social security, using the events at Rick Santorum's recent town hall meeting on the subject as a departure point. They have a form that makes it very easy and suggested talking points (as well as a video clip of the goings on in PA). I stronly recommend using it. It will not take you much time.
Please use this diary to share your letters. My letter (I chose the Chicago Sun-Times for my destination) is below the fold.
To the editor,
I was surprised and amused to witness on CNN young Republicans outside Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum's town hall meeting on Social Security chanting "Hey, ho, hey, ho, Social Security has got to go!"
Apparently, they didn't get the memo that Republicans are supposed to pretend that Bush's scheme to siphon money out of the program and into private accounts to be managed by Wall St. brokers is supposed to strengthen the system not destroy it. Of course, how any program that would result in the government having to borrow $2 trillion in the short term, on top of the $400+ billion annual deficits Bush is running, would strengthen the system is beyond me, and anyone else who completed 2nd grade math. As with all of Bush's budget projections, his Social Security plan rests on the notion that 2-1=4.
Howard Dean is right: You just can't trust Republicans with your money. And I certainly wouldn't trust their designs on the most successful social insurance program in the world. Those refreshingly honest young Republicans in Pennsylvania tell us all we need to know.
Sincerely,
[Jim in Chicago]
