OK, gang, this is really just a bit silly, but it's maybe worth a look. Via Bob's Newswire, here's a link to a
story about a guy trying to get a customized NFL jersey at the NFL Shop web site. It seems that not all personalizations are created equal. While you can get a jersey personalized with the name "Hitler" or "Bin Laden," you can't get one with "Gay" or "Lesbian" on it.
I was going to post this on an open thread (and I'm sure any number of people will let me know if it really belongs there), but I thought the community might like to have some fun with this. More after the break!
[Update, by btrain]Points from commenters below are well taken. This isn't silly at all, I guess. It's another troubling example of homophobia embedded in the culture. My original response was to the fun of creating outlandish names that the system would accept. Others have gone a bit bleaker, and I think I'll have to defer to the serious angle on this.
Here's a jersey inspired by the fine film
South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. (Please, no Gannon foolishness.)
This is an actual screen shot of a jersy that NFL Shop would apparently be happy to sell me. For the truly offensive words like "gay" and "lesbian," you can't even add the item to your shopping cart.
Anybody else care to give it a try and post the fruits of your labors here?
