So, it seems like everyone is jumping on McCain-Feingold here and is making assumptions about their desire to regulate activities on the Internet. I agree, if they're really trying to regulate links and content of a web site, then we need to fight about that. But let's remember a few things here.
1. Russ was the only member of the Senate to vote against the Patriot Act and its infringments on civil liberties. Do you really think he would be out in front of a policy that tries to restrict speech on a web site?
(more below)
- Russ has been leading the fight against media consolidation. Do you really think he would support a policy that would solidify the corporate media's grip on American political discourse?
- We have no idea what McCain and Feingold's intentions are with suing to get regulations over the internet. We should probably see what they have to say about this before we make too many assumptions.
- Russ's mother passed away just about 2 days ago, so he may not be in a condition to add his side of the story for a few days.
Overall I think it is rather sad that we are willing to jump on a man who probably has more integrity than all the Republicans in Congress combined, and who has been described by Wisconsin's Republican small-town newspapers as "a shill for the ACLU." We should be ready to fight this if need be, but for now I think that the alarmists are just a touch overblown.
