This will be the last update of the 2004 Mandate-vs-date entry.
I've been following presidential election numbers reported by CNN, CSPAN, and
YAHOO! as returns were compiled and amended after the election day.
Here is the summary:
- Kerry received 54.3% of the ~6.6 million post-election-day 2-way votes
- Bush 2-way lead went from 3.13% on election day to 2.49% now (from 3,581,574
to 3,012,497)
- Bush still claims the majority of the overall vote, with 50.73%. That number stood at ~51.03% the day after the election.
The post-election develpments raise a number of questions about the election process. <over please>
- The post-election updates were consistently in Democratic candidate's favor (54.3% vs election day ), as indicated by the lack of wide swings in the mandate vs. count graph. Why such an enormous discrepancy?
- 0.64% difference in the lead (0.32% of the vote) is HUGE by any historical measure. More than half of Kerry's gain materialized AFTER one full month from the election day.
I surely hope I won't have to do this again in '08.
