The polls on this feeding tube business seems to indicate one thing to me. When push comes to shove, most Americans are not interested in living in a theocracy.
I have no idea why something like this Schiavo woman's fiasco has been the catalyst for some much attitude change but I am certainly thankful for it. I have had a snootful of christian bullshit over the years. Christians eager to tell me what to think, how to feel, what I should be allowed to read or listen to on the radio. I'm sick of all the anti-abortion rhetoric and the stem-cell faux-outrage. I have long ago defined the politicized christian movement to be my enemy. I value my personal liberty too much to ceed it over to some bible thumpers.
I am surprised but also very pleased that the events of the past week seem to have awakened so many to the dangers of theocratic government. Go figure. Beats me why the disposition of one brain dead woman in Florida is what it took.
Many conservatives are appalled at what the Republican Pary has become. But I am concerned that there appears to be strong resistance to moving over to the Democratic side.
In my opinion, too much of the liberal left shares a sin with these fundy christians. Too much of liberal left rhetoric is focused on other intrusions into individual freedoms to be an attractive alternative. Too many on our side want to ban gun ownership (I happen to like my guns and will not easily give them up). We put forth too many restrictions on nasty habits - quick to favor anti-smoking legislation or maybe some forms of anti-porn censorship.
I think we can stand to learn a lesson here. If we become the movement of personal liberty - all personal liberty. We may find support for ideas like choice, and gay marriage from places we have historically written off. Maybe even the NRA.
