We interrupt the Schiavo-thon for some follow-up on a story from 'way back at the beginning of this month: the
"Illegal Immigrant Hunt" planned by local Young Conservatives of Texas and thwarted by sane people when word got out. More than 200 turned out for a preemptive "hate is not activism" protest.
Stephen Torres, student director of the university's Multicultural Information Center said: "We kind of took away the surprise, their ability to have the event... we hope they learned that bigotry and hatred won't be tolerated without being confronted."
The YCT, however, insisted that they'd planned no such thing, that the event was simply for observing Texas Independence Day. Just "Cakes and Cookies and Lemonade!!!," according to Lauren Conner, chair of the University of Texas at Austin chapter of the YCT.
Indeed, no one seemed to be able to find any evidence -- online, at least -- that the organization had in fact planned a "hunt." Could this have just been a case of trigger-happy lefties taking any opportunity for a protest? That's how the YCT tried to paint it.
Well, no, according to a story in the current Asian Week:
In the weeks leading up to March 2, one member from the Latino Leadership Council... posed as a YCT member at UT Austin and learned that the group planned another "Immigrant Hunt" on Texas Independence Day.
Some further explanation of the undercover op:
The Latino student, Emily Goodrum, was able to pose as a member of the YCTs because "she looks white," according to Torres.
One can't help but think of the possibilites. Could we, for instance, infiltrate Grover Norquist's Wednesday Group if we signed up somebody who "looks rabid"?
