What's the saying--one is a fluke, two is a coincidence, three is a trend?
Well, it's officially a trend now--College Republicans will try to excuse the most stupid and offensive things imaginable in the name of "fostering dialogue" or "discussion."
The latest example: the College Republicans at Grand Valley State University in Michigan held an affirmative action bake sale last month, selling cup cakes at $2 for white persons, $.75 to African-Americans, $.50 to an Asian or a Hispanic, and a nickel to Native Americans.
www.woodtv.com :
Kyle Rausch, the organizer of the bake sale, says they only sold one cupcake, and the event was neither about making money nor offending anybody, but rather to "facilitate discussion."
"Individuals who walked by weren't too offended. We're not making a mockery of anyone who receives affirmative action. We wanted normal people who really don't know a lot about it to see it and kind of come to their own conclusion, to come and engage us in discussion."
Rausch has since stepped down as head of the GVSU College GOP'ers.
In case you're wondering, I'm counting as the other two points on our trend line:
- the UConn College Republicans, who invited former wrestler Ultimate Warrior to speak to them earlier this week, only to have him respond to some questioners with a tirade that included such gems as "Queering don't make the world work," and telling an Iranian student to "get a towel." The UConn College Republicans later issued an apology, seemingly surprised that inviting a once steroid-fueled, face-painted musclehead to speak didn't further their goal of promoting "constructive dialogue on campus."
- the College Republicans at Santa Rosa Junior College in California, who posted red stars on the doors of instructors they deemed leftist in order to "promote a discussion."
