Rep. Frank Corte, San Antonio, Tx, has filed two different bills which were being debated in the Texas House yesterday.
One, HB 16, is the insidious bill we have seen in other states, granting pharmacists the right to refuse to issue "emergency" contraception based on moral beliefs. From reading the bill, I think the definition of emergency leaves it quite open to interpretation to any kind of contraception.
"DEFINITION. In this chapter, "emergency
contraceptive" means a prescription drug containing an elevated
dose of hormones that is used to prevent pregnancy."
But wait, there's more...he's been busy...
He has filed a second bill,
HB 1469, regarding information doctors have to give to women prior to an abortion. One of the requirements in this bill is that doctors inform women of the increased risk of breast cancer relating to abortion, even though this has been proven to be a total fallacy! "iii) the possibility of increased risk of
breast cancer following an induced abortion and the natural
protective effect of a completed pregnancy in avoiding breast
cancer."
If you are in Texas, (or even if you aren't!), call your Texas House Representative today and let them know how you feel about this legislation.
To pass a falsehood into law is despicable legislative practice.
They have given us lots of little fires to fight--let's put these two out!
