In a piece about David Horowitz, the National Review Online presents dailykos as a measure of the "opposition's" reaction to that pie in the face Horowitz took last week at Butler University.
www.nationalreview.com :
Just a week before Horowitz was chocolate-creamed, Weekly Standard editor William Kristol got hit with an ice-cream pie while speaking to students at Earlham College, as it happens also in Indiana.
But Horowitz has a particular talent for sending the opposition into paroxysms of rage, even when he's being attacked and not on the attack himself. Daily Kos, for instance, called Horowitz a "sissyboy racist" in commenting on the pie-in-the-face incident. Kristol's incident, by contrast, got the relatively bland Kos description: "Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy."
While it's true that many on dkos (including myself) have enjoyed a chuckle at Horowitz's chocolate cream facial, there were many others who objected to these pie-ings. And so far as I know, kos himself has never weighed in on them--which certainly isn't clear from the above.
More on the flip
First, to salute the kossacks who came to NRO's attention:
Standup and take a bow, trifecta, he's talking about you: David Horowitz: Sissyboy Racist.
And you too, Buckeye BattleCry, for your William Kristol Takes a Pie to the Kisser at Earlham College, which contained the "nicer guy" comment.
Now, one could reasonably object--especially if one were named, say, Markos Moulitsas--that neither of these descriptions came from kos himself, as the second paraphrase in the NRO in particular seems to imply.
Nor do they give anything like the full range of reaction to these pie-ings on dkos, which also included this, from Bundy on Buckeye Battlecry's diary:
I'm a proud liberal, who believes in free speech, open discourse, individual rights, and open-mindedness. These are some the core principles of liberalism, and the pie thrower was in violation of all these.
And there have been a number of anti-pie-ing diaries, including Virginia Dem's "Put Down The Pie".
I'm not looking to re-fight the pie wars here--we've had plenty of that in the past few weeks. But it's worth keeping an eye on how the "opposition" represents us on these matters.
Fair and balanced? I'll let you decide.
