"College Social Security Rally Day"--when student GOP'ers were urged to show their support of the President's "reform" plans with cat-food buffets--went off with hardly a whimper yesterday, in a fitting accompaniment to the wind-up of Bush's adult version of the Bamboozlepalooza tour.
The failure came even though Karl Rove reportedly spoke earlier this week with student leaders to urge their support.
From the Washington Times:
Although many pundits insist that Social Security reform is dead, the White House refuses to surrender. This week, it is trying to rally youth to the cause.
White House policy adviser and political guru Karl Rove held a conference call with 14 groups Tuesday, including the Young Professionals of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, state leaders of the College Republicans, and the Young Hispanic Republican Association, a Republican official told this column yesterday.
Mr. Rove, who was joined by Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform, urged the young people to play a pivotal role in the coming debate, especially by contacting their congressmen.
More on the flip...
Although the College GOP'er events were intended to attract "earned media" attention, I've so far seen only one news report demonstrating their success. It came at Minnesota's Univ. of St. Thomas, where student Republicans landed themselves in the news recently for hosting what university president Dennis Dease called "hateful speech" by Ann Coulter.
No word if the UST GOP'ers had wet food or dry still on hand from Coulter's appearance.....
