I am not sure if and/or how we can persuade America that liberalism is the answer. I believe it is; you believe it is, but the message has gone out that liberalism is destroying America, and it is an almost unbeatable argument.
It begins and ends with George W. Bush. He is a good man. A good Christian man. People voted for him for that reason more than any other. What was the evidence? He said he was. He confidently asserted on every occasion that he was a good man and a humble man. And people bought it.
In comedy, they say, "Buy the premise, buy the joke." A joke that starts, "An iguana walked into a bar..." will only be funny if you suspend disbelief and buy the premise. People bought the premise that W. is a good, humble man. Any evidence to the contrary is explained away by: a) that was before he got saved, and b) the person who said it is a Bush basher. What an absolutely brilliant set up.
Fast forward. Now he is President. His office deserves respect (plus he is a good, humble man.). Any criticism is sour grapes.
9-11 changed everything (except the fact that he is a good, humble man). Thank God we have a Christian in the White House. Because any decision he makes will be based on prayer. If we don't see why he does something, just remember... he is a good and humble man.
The war in Iraq. Had to be right. He is a good man, Saddam was a bad man. Good triumphed over evil. The path may have been rocky... but it always is when good fights evil.
And now our champion, our warrior is under attack. People question his motives, his actions. But we know...... he is a good and humble man.
People question his policies, his choices for cabinet posts and judgeships, but we know... he is a good and humble man.
Not only that, but those who most oppose him must be those most unlike him. In other words, the more forcefully you come against this good and humble man, the more dangerous you are and the more dangerous your beliefs are. You are not just out to destroy this good and humble man, you are out to destroy America. And God fearing people can't permit that.
The final premise is one of labels. Because conservatives like black and white, absolutes, conformity, they can say, "ALL Conservatives....." and be pretty close to accurate. They extend this to believe that they can also accurately say, "ALL Liberals..." And we scream, because we do not all think alike, we are individuals. We are a collection of people with diverse views. BUT... we oppose W. who is....... a good and humble man. Therefore we can all be grouped together as anti-God, anti-American, anti-values. And there is no way around it that I can see.
