Trenton Bishop John M. Smith refused to help 9-year-old girl whose first Holy Communion was declared invalid because her Communion wafer was made of rice instead of wheat. The girl suffers from celiac sprue disease, a digestive disorder, which makes it unsafe for her to consume wafers that have wheat.
What would Jesus eat? Here's a response from a Catholic priest:

I'm so flabbergasted, I don't know where to start. As a former Catholic, I know that they have taken many other liberties with the sacrament. There has been no wine and grape juice instead of wine. There have been pressed wafers and broken crackers. You used to not be allowed to touch the wafer, now you can.
But you know, every religion is a human-made and human-managed organization. Religions don't go to Heaven or suffer for sins, people do. People have the option to change religions. If a religion wants to oppress their followers, deny them educations in science, or send them to die in holy wars, they can do so. But it will only be the followers who will be held accountable.
