Antiwar.com
http://www.antiwar.com has carried a report that for some weeks Turkey has been conducting attacks inside Kurdish Iraq. The Kurds were American allies prior to the Republican invasion of Iraq, and maintained with American support a quasiindependent state in Northeast Iraq.
The United States has apparently historically maintained support and training missions in Northeast Iraq to support the Kurdish army(ies), the Peshmerga. It is inapparent that a Turkish invasion in the same part of the country, even if carefully executed, does not create a significant risk of American casualties.
The Republican invasion of Iraq is profoundly unpopular in much of Turkey. In recent months, a military future history book "Steel Storm", detailing an American invasion of Turkey, has become a best seller. (So far as I can tell, there is not presently an English translation.)
The full report is carried on Middle East Newsline. They supply a teaser article luring people to their full site:
TURKEY LAUNCHES ATTACKS ON KURDISH BASES IN IRAQ
ANKARA [MENL] -- Turkey's military has launched strikes on Kurdish insurgency bases in northern Iraq.
After two years of threats, Ankara has sent ground forces, attack helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft to Kandil mountain strongholds of the Kurdish Workers Party. Most of the weapons used by Turkey were imported from the United States.
The government of Prime Minister Recep Erdogan has not reported the attacks. But Kurdish sources in southeastern Turkey said Ankara began attacks in late April against PKK strongholds with F-16 multi-role fighters, AH-1G attack helicopters and M-60 main battle tanks.
The Turkish military said in a statement this week that PKK insurgents were infiltrating Turkey from Iraq in increasing numbers. The military said the insurgents were bringing large amounts of explosives into Turkey.

Recalling that Coalition Reporters are unable to travel through the country--because unlike Viet Nam we have no secure areas--it is hard to conclude that the report cannot be true.
