Ehrlich seems to be veto happy these days. He just finished
vetoing the Health Care bill and today has announced he vetoing the
Gay Rights Bill.
I'll let you all read the stories, but a few things I want to comment on:
"Phone calls are pouring into our office from people across the state who are shocked, hurt and dismayed at how such a moderate piece of legislation conferring basic human rights could be rejected by a supposedly moderate governor," said Dan Furmansky, executive director of Equality Maryland, a gay-rights group that lobbied for the legislation, known as the Medical Decision Making Act of 2005.
I hope this is true, because I hate to think I live in bigoted state that would favor denying what this bill provides to all its citizens. I am shocked, what is our society coming to if we allow hatred and bigotry to determine our laws?
"The bill has a lot of flaws and a lot of unintended consequences, and I think this is the right decision," said House Minority Whip Anthony J. O'Donnell (R-Calvert). "I know the governor wrestled with this decision because he may be sympathetic to some of the intentions. But sometimes bad laws are the result of good intentions."
And what are those flaws? I don't understand where these people are getting the flaws and unintended consequences. This is pure bigotry against gays.
We have to wait until January to see if the state legislature can override this veto, and the Health Care bill veto, but I think Ehrlich is giving the dems numerous campaign issues for 2006.
