Schwartzenegger Unveils Emissions Plan
"Today, California will be a leader in the fight against global warming," Schwarzenegger told a United Nations conference on the environment.
"I say the debate is over. We know the science, we see the threat and we know the time for action is now," he said.
Schwarzenegger unveiled his plan at the opening of the five-day United Nations World Environment Day Conference, the first ever held on U.S. soil. No major Bush administration official has announced plans to attend.
Although I'm not pleased to have Schwartzenegger as Governor, I am happy that he's willing to stray from the Republican lock-step, explore different ideas, and change his mind. It will be interesting to see the GOP reaction to this particular initiative - and his flat declaration that the science is in.
Yes, he has a Hummer. But, if he uses his muscle to make energy efficiency and reduced emissions a state priority, he'll have done more to offset those emissions than he could by just buying a Prius.
Me, I'm hoping that this plan has a provision he's talked about for buying old tractors. Mama wants a shiny new low-emissions tractor!
