Today my 17 year-old son woke up at 6:30AM to help put up the American flags along Main Street. He is a Boy Scout now working to become an Eagle Scout. It made me proud. Just as proud as I was to read his notes to his junior speech that is required of all public school students here in New Jersey. The speech was on Loving v. Virginia and our nation's long history of laws against miscegenation. (My wife is African American and I am white. We have been married 26+ years). Just as proud as when he participated in an anti-war rally among high school students in our town in January 2003. Proud like I was of my college age daughter who, on her own, knocked on doors in Philly for John Kerry last fall.
I hope you all have your flags up for Flag Day. We should all be proud of our country and keep working our asses off to make it a better place for people like my son and daughter.
